January Drop In

Pawel Achtel ACS

Our guest at the first Drop In of the year will be Pawel Achtel ACS. Pawel has been involved in underwater cinematography for almost 30 years. Pawel also designs and produces underwater cinematography equipment. His work has been featured by National Geographic, BBC, Discovery and Sony. For almost a decade Pawel's focus has been on 3D cinematography for IMAX and Giant Screen cinema. Pawel is a member of the Technical Committee at Giant Screen Cinema Association (GSCA) and the Australian Cinematographers Society Technical Committee and has achieved numerous prestigious Australian and International awards. In 2013 he won the coveted Studio Daily Innovation Award at NAB Show in Las Vegas and in 2015 was awarded the inaugural Bob Miller ACS Technical and Innovation Award.

As a member of Technical Committee of the Giant Screen Cinema Association (GSCA) Pawel has designed an accurate and objective way to measure colour reproduction accuracy of cinema cameras. In plain English, the process tests the range of colours that a camera can see and how accurately it can reproduce them. To make the test more accurate, Pawel uses a laboratory spectroscope, which can project all visible monochromatic colours (think the colours of the rainbow) directly onto the camera's sensor. Such an approach removes a number of variables, inaccuracies and subjective interpretation that are usually introduced through lighting, lenses, dyes, and other factors associated with the traditional way of using colour charts. In July 2018, Pawel, with assistance from the ACS Queensland branch, evaluated the Sony Venice, ARRI Alexa LF, RED Monstro, and Panavision DXL2. The results of that test will be shared during our July Drop In.

Members, sponsors and guests are invited to attend

DMG Lumiere Mix

Proudly sponsored by Rosco and Creative Film and Theatre Solutions ACS members, sponsors and guests are invited to the "DMG Lumiere Mix" launch at ACS Headquarters (address below) on February 6th from 6pm.

Since the dawn of coloured cinema, set lighting professionals have put Rosco gels on tungsten or daylight balanced fixtures to create coloured light. That time-honoured process has recently shifted to colour-mixing LED technology, which has its own limitations. MIX, like any fixture engineered by DMG Lumière, was designed by technicians for technicians to address the issues that set lighting crew members have voiced about the colour-mixing LED fixtures they're working with today. The features of the new MIX LED technology provide superior colour, easy-to-use control interfaces and other innovative solutions that enable filmmakers to create the precise colour of light they want while speeding up their workflow.

We usually don't ask you to RSVP for events held at HQ but this time, in the interests of arranging catering, we ask you to text an RSVP to Ross on 0417 828 346 by January 30th.
