Dear fellow cinematographers, camera crew, life members, associates and student members,
I am honoured to have been elected as your WA branch President for 2017/18. It would not be prudent to go any further without saying a big thank you to our past President, Simon Akkerman ACS, who has shaped our branch these last 3 years. He has unselfishly given a huge amount of energy and time to the WA ACS, pulling us together and creating the foundations of a really fabulous branch.
I firmly believe the branch has an exciting year ahead, with a new committee consisting of some older faces, as well as a few brand new ones. This mix makes for an exciting time to be listening to ideas from members, pushing forward with events and concepts, some of which were bought up at the AGM. I can assure you all that we as a committee can’t wait to get cracking.
Whilst the elected committee is there to represent the members and help run the branch, above all it is you, the members, who make us what we are as a Society, so please tell us what you think and feel is important for our branch. We strongly encourage you to participate in your branch in any way you can, as you are always welcome at our monthly committee meetings and planned events. The hard work of organising events is for everyone’s benefit, so please get involved, turn up or maybe even offer to help out.
We are only just around the corner from the SA/WA ACS Awards, which will be held in Adelaide this year on the 28th of October. We encourage any WA branch members that would like to go to the awards to visit the website to book, the SA branch always make us WA lot feel extremely welcome, whether you have an entry in or not.
To the committee I say a big thank you for putting your hands up and giving up your valuable time these next 12 months, let’s start turning those ideas into a reality.

**MEMBER DROP IN "LIGHTING" SESSION**

To kick off our new Member Drop In Sessions Sean Dooley from Arri Australia will be popping in to show us the new series of Sky Panel lighting fixtures, featuring for the first time in Aus, the new super-punchy "S-360" Sky Panel which pumps out 3 times the brightness of a 12K tungsten space light!
These are some seriously cool lights people! So don't miss out on this "Lighting" session!
Local Gaffer Dion Borrett from 2D Films is kindly supplying the rigging gear for the night. Dion, a WA ACS member, has built a great relationship with Sean over the years through their mutual involvement with the ACS and has managed to persuade Sean to come over and give us a show 'n' play!
Sean will also be covering the tech side of these lovely panels looking at the Gel Library, Lighting Effects, Pixel Mapping Software, Source Matching and High Speed Mode.
So if you're a member then come and join us for the first in a series of events scheduled for the near future.

2017 AGM WRAP - WELCOME OUR NEW 2018 COMMITTEE

On 30th September 2017 the WA ACS Branch held its Annual General Meeting, with a great turn out recorded and the new committee being formed for the 2017/2018 year. The meeting took place at Johnny Ma Studios, with the elections being kindly run by Daryl Binning ACS. Once results were formalised ACS WA members welcomed in the newly elected committee;

Vice Presidents: Rusty Geller SOC and Simon Akkerman ACS
Treasurer: Nigel Tomkinson
Secretary: Daniel Holliday
Committee Members: Ben Berkhout, Michael Titter, Mahmudal Raz, Erin Macliver and Ross Metcalf.
The AGM provided a great opportunity for members to meet, give feedback and ideas to the new committee for the coming year, with the session ending with a great presentation by Sean Dooley from Arri Australia. Sean was able to outline the history of Arri and their cameras, spanning their centenary of operation (100 year celebrations happening this year) and also allowed for a hands on demonstration of the Arri Alexa Mini, the Arri Amira and the Master Anamorphic 50mm lens, which captured, and held many members attention. The event was enjoyed by all who attended.
The coming year promises to be filled with great events and times to get together and share with each other.
The new committee welcomes Dave to the role of President, wishing him all the best for the coming year, while also being thankful to Simon for his tireless work and stewardship of the branch over the last few years.

ACS WA/SA STATE AWARDS 28TH OCT 2017

Hi WA Branch,
It has been an exciting time for me since the AGM last month, namely I was invited to be a judge on the state award panels in both Adelaide then Melbourne and finally honored to be on the ACS accreditation panel in Sydney. I would like to say a little about how the judging process works as I too am new to all this, but I hope it gives you an insight into the whole process.
Upon meeting your fellow judges you are quickly ushered into the dark viewing room to begin a long day of screenings. In SA/WA we had about 94 entries and 140 in VIC/TAS. The Cinematographer’s name is taken off the entry so they cannot be identified and no discussion is allowed until after all the scores are in and counted by the adjudicator. Only if two entries tie is a discussion opened to the judges and then asked if anyone would alter his or her score to alleviate the tie. To add two out of the 5 judges have to be inter-state so in keeping with a fair and impartial process. To achieve a Bronze you need 70%, Silver 75% and Gold 80%, however there can only be 3 Golds, 2 Silver and 1 Bronze awarded in any category. It was extremely tight in some of the categories with entries just missing out on a Gold award even if they had achieved the required 80%, as three Golds had already been awarded with a slightly higher score. Sadly many missed out on a Bronze or Silver for the same reason, although they had reached the minimum 70-75% mark, they just get knocked out, which only goes to show the standard of entries we had to view.
So to the winners on Saturday at the SA/WA awards in Adelaide, very well done and commiseration to the ones not so lucky but I hope you can rest assured the process was a fair but a tough one that came down to the wire.
I encourage all members to submit some work next year! Have a crack and you might surprise yourself!
Fellow committee member Ross Metcalf who's currently shooting in Adelaide will be joining me at the awards along with the rest of the SA mob at Adelaide Oval on Saturday night.

ACSWA attends Screenwest Industry Association Meeting

ACS WA committee members Dan Holliday and Ben Berkhout were invited to represent the branch along with leading representatives from a wide range of industry guilds and associations to discuss issues, with Screenwest CEO Ian Booth, relating to the current and future situation of the WA Film and Television Industry.
One positive to come from this meeting was that there seems to be a fair few productions cropping up next next year, which I'm sure everyone will be chomping at the bit to get a slice of the action.
The "Make It Australian" campaign has been building momentum and making an impact on political circles. As members I urge you to get behind the movement any way you can and support your Australian content. Visit the link below and send that email!
Ben and Dan were also able strengthen the connection ACS has with our industry associates and look forward to working with them in the future with an Industry Association "Catch Up" possibly in the works.
The ACS WA Branch thank leaving CEO Ian Booth for his tireless efforts in support of the WA Film and Television Industry and look forward to what the future brings in the next chapter of Screenwest.

POSTCARDS: G'DAY I'M OUT OF WA

Hi fellow ACSers,
A quick postcard from the other side of the world, I am currently working on a historical documentary series, can't say too much at the moment.
People always ask what I love about doing Docos and its quite simply the people and the places. Its a great way to see the world and meet amazing people. I really love telling their stories.
The great thing about this series is the fact that I get to choose my camera crew, something that doesn't always happen. I approached local WA ACS member Ben Berkhout to be my Data wrangler & B camera operator. So glad he accepted. It wasn't something that he had done on this scale before.
On this project, my greatest pleasure was watching Ben as he worked his way through the long hours, exotic locations, and crew dynamics. It wasn't always easy.
I really enjoyed the chance to share what I have learnt over the last 15 years
on the road with him. The best thing, it wasn't a one way street, Ben taught me so much, and hopefully I did the same for him.
To be able to share this adventure with fellow West Australians Ben and sound recordist Ash Charlton made it more fun.
Has been a epic adventure.

Representatives from MEAA and Entertainment Law will be explaining their role in the WA film industry and how they can support local creatives and crew.
The branch will soon be joining forces with ASSG WA crew, our sound loving friends, to form an insightful discussion on some age old "film set" debates. We don't want to give too much away just yet. But it will be a great event for cinematographers at any level.

Upcoming Event: ACS WA 50th Birthday Reunion

The ACS WA Branch committee with the help from life member Daryl Binning ACS are currently planning a Oldschool Reunion to coincide with the branch's 50th Birthday. Join us to celebrate our members who have previously played a huge part in the society to make it what it is today, and it also gives them a chance to catch up with the old and meet some new members. The event will be at the Applecross Bowls Club in April, 2018.
If you are a long time member of the ACS or you know somebody that was active ‘back in the day’ please have them contact us as soon as possible! Lets aim to get as many current and past members there!
