Message from the President

Greetings ACS colleagues and friends,

I received the following email from our ACS Awards Guest of Honour, Ms Noni Hazlehurst AM, and would like to share it with you;

"Hi there Ron,
Thank you for inviting me to be part of the Awards. I thought you did a brilliant job, and it was wonderful to feel the immense respect and good will in the room.
And it was lovely to catch up with some old workmates - or should I say dance partners!
Hope you get a chance to relax after your efforts.
Best wishes,
Noni xx”

It was a fantastic evening, and my thanks to the Queensland branch for making it an Awards presentation to remember. In many ways it was a blessing we finished earlier than in the past, as it gave all present the opportunity to chat and renew old friendships.

The Awards were streamed live and I had texts from Greig Fraser ACS ASC in Wellington, Brad Dillon ACS in Singapore and many others who were able to watch the presentation from afar.

Congratulations to Simon Duggan ACS on his Milli Award, to Ossie Emery ACS, Alan Cole ACS and JoAnne Bouzianis-Sellick on their induction into the ACS Hall of Fame; and to all those who were successful with Gold Tripods or Awards of Distinction and our other special ACS Awards including the Drew Llewelyn ACS Camerimage Scholarship to Ms Sissy Reyes, the John Leake OAM ACS Emerging Cinematographer Award to Benjamin Cotgrove and the Bob Miller - ACS Technical and Innovation Achievement Award to Tom Waugh and Chris Fox.

It must be said the camaraderie in the room was palpable…It was a joy to see so many engaged in conversations everywhere you turned. This is what our Awards and the Society are all about, this is what is important, the fact that mutual respect for one another is alive and well. My sincere thanks to all those who worked so very hard to ensure it was a successful evening and again, heartfelt congratulations to all those nominees and Award recipients.

All the Awards events were a great success, and the support we received from our National sponsors who attended the ‘Impressions” Expo was simply overwhelming, my sincere thanks to you all. Of course, the Griffith Film School played a significant role in the Awards events and my thanks go to Herman Van Eyken the Head of School, to Brett Wiltshire who attended and controlled numerous bushfires along with the GFS staff who were simply outstanding. Let’s not forget the <“Meet the Nominees” with Kim Batterham ACS and Erika Addis at the helm and a huge thank you to Garry Phillips ACS who hosted the screening of “Picnic at Hanging Rock" on the Friday evening and to the Producers and to Fremantle Media who very generously allowed us to screen the film before it went to air.

Next year the National Awards will be in Victoria, so start preparing!

Until next time
Ron Johanson OAM ACS
National President

Simon Duggan ACS Wins Milli Award for Australian Cinematographer of the Year at 2018 Fujinon Fujifilm ACS National Awards

At this year’s Fujinon Fujifilm Australian Cinematographers Society (ACS) National Awards, the society’s night of nights, held at Brisbane’s prestigious Customs House it was Simon Duggan ACS (Hacksaw Ridge) who took out the coveted Milli award for Australian Cinematographer of the Year.

Duggan, was unable to collect the award in person due to overseas shooting commitments, had already received critical international acclaim for the Mel Gibson-directed Hacksaw Ridge and was truly humbled as he accepted the award by recorded video saying,

“I’m very honoured to receive this year’s Milli award for Hacksaw Ridge. As we know it’s always a collaboration between a great director, cast and crew to achieve such an amazing result. I’ve always enjoyed the local and international films I’ve shot here in Australia and I’ve managed to have the very best Australian crews behind me over the years. I would like to thank the society and president Ron Johanson OAM ACS along with all the committee members and all the sponsors who have made tonight and so many other ACS events possible.”
