January Drop In

We are pleased to announce that our guest at the first Drop In of 2018 will be NSW member Lachlan Milne ACS.

Lachie has worked in the camera department for almost 20 years and, during the last 14 of those years, has established himself as a well respected and enthusiastic cinematographer who works primarily on feature films and television commercials both nationally and internationally.

On Thursday night Lachie will screen a selection of his commercial and feature work and will discuss with us his approach to both these fields of cinematography.

He will screen a selection of scenes from the very successful "Hunt for the Wilderpeople" and discuss his working relationship with director Taika Waititi.

As established at HQ on numerous occasions the evening will take the form of a very informal Q&A with audience participation certainly encouraged.

Make your way to HQ (address below) on Thursday 18th January. As usual doors will be open from 6pm with Lachie's presentation kicking off at 6:40pm or so.

A Quick Summer Movie Review

"All the Money in the World"
Cinematographer
Dariusz Wolski ASC

This amazingly true story is evenly paced and beautifully photographed.

The location interiors are rich and textured but muted and desaturated keeping an "in the era" feel to the whole look. There is some black & white footage and some great use of real fire which, me being a big fan of 80 year old director Ridley Scott seems something he loves and has used across all his films, huge fires roaring in fireplaces. This give a cozy glow to essentially a cold depressing world of interiors that this film shows us.

All locations are very appropriate but Ridley and Dariusz shoot everything so wide in a masterly way. Great use of steadicam where needed and hand held where appropriate. The style is big bright windows with very little fill light, even the exteriors are dark and moody. The baddies are sweaty and swarthy and the Italian city and village night exteriors are streetlight yellow and brilliantly executed. A great looking film.

Dariusz Wolski's previous credits include: Prometheus, three of the Pirates OTC films, Alice in Wonderland, The Martian, The Mexican and loads of rock music videos with CSNY, Van Halen & Eminem.
