National eNews and much much more....

Message from the President

Greetings ACS friends and colleagues,

Our National Awards judging for 2018 has been completed and we now wait with great anticipation for the Awards presentation, this year hosted by the Queensland Branch at the historic

Brisbane Customs House
Saturday, 5th May
with our very special Guest of Honour,
acclaimed Australian actor, Ms Noni Hazlehurst AM.

Our National Awards for Cinematography not only recognises the very best of the best, but gives those attending the opportunity to catch up with friends and colleagues in a relaxed atmosphere of brotherhood. Cinematographers spend their careers separated from family and friends but at times they enjoy the camaraderie of both and it shows.

There will be a number of other events associated with the National Awards, one being the “Meet the Nominees” session on the morning of Saturday 5th at the Griffith Film School Theatre which has become a traditional part of the Awards festivities. Moderared by Kim Batterham ACS and featuring a number of those cinematographers nominated for Awards, it promises to be a real highlight. There will also be a number of special guests along with a screening/Q&A hosted by one of our finest cinematographers on the Friday evening. There will be an event we’re calling ACS SPONSORS “IMPRESSIONS” EXPO which will take place on Friday 4th May at the Griffith Film School Studio from 10.00am until 5.00pm. Plenty of opportunities to have a hands on experience with the very latest of equipment.

My thanks to the generosity of the participating National sponsors at this time who include FUJINON, KAYELL, CW Sonderoptic, PANASONIC, MILLER CAMERA SUPPORT, PANAVISION, ROSCO, GEAR HEAD, LEMAC and ARRI Australia.
The Awards program of events will be announced soon and promises much and we all hope you will seize the moment and support your Society and your fellow cinematographers.

My sincere thanks to the Queensland Branch under the inspired leadership of John Stokes ACS and the amazing Awards committee of Hemma Kearney, Tim Jordin, Erika Addis, Mick Fanning and Josh Logan. Special thanks to all at Griffith Film School for their generous support and collaborative spirit.

Until next time
Ron Johanson OAM ACS
National President

2018 Craft Awards - TROPFEST CINEMATOGRAPHY CATEGORY WINNERS

The ACS proudly sponsored the category and John, Roger and Velinda were judges.

Tropfest winner for the night was young Nick Ward and Lachlan Thompson, the cinematographers for Boys Don't Cry, which so far has seen nearly 5000 views on youtube, and is a beautiful short film that documents teenage mental health issues. All the more remarkable in that it was made by a group of 16 year olds, who clearly have a very bright future in front of them.
