SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT: AFTRS Cinematography students experience the Gobi desert

Recently AFTRS Cinematography students Michi Marosszeky and Damian Smith along with Screen Music student and Kim Batterham, Head of Cinematography at AFTRS jetted off to the Gobi Desert via Beijing to participate in the second 'BrotherWin Cup International Originality Design Contest for College Students'.

This fantastic opportunity came about through a relationship AFTRS established with the Parsons Design School in New York last year, where three students from 12 international tertiary institutions joined 35 Chinese students to trek across the Gobi desert on a creative mission. The AFTRS team prepared for the trip with a grueling regime of gym and trekking training along with intensive Chinese lessons.

Kim Batterham said before they departed for China " It's a once in a lifetime opportunity to produce a piece of work in one of the most remote, photogenic and culturally divergent locations in the world".

Team AFTRS returned to Australia on May 25 and are now working on delivering their creative response.

Kim Batterham says this of the experience "We had the most amazing time as guests of Brother Win Culture Media Group meeting and trekking with students from really diverse areas of study from all over China. We walked with 90 other students and teachers six hours a day through the Kubuchi desert. The dunes had a soft beauty and the Chinese were amazing hosts. We also teamed up with the group from Parsons, New York, undertaking creative work together in Beijing. Overall the experience was intense, stimulating and fascinating".
