SA Kinemagraphe July 2011

From the SA President July 2011

Welcome to the July edition of Kinemagraphe. If you have any pictures, news or articles for our eNews please contact our editor Kirsty Stark. They could even be archival pictures that could give us a laugh like this one of me as a camera assistant with Volk Mol ACS in the early 70's. Gotta love that hair!

Please note date change: The SA AGM is now on Thursday night 11th August.

Accreditation closes soon so get your skates on if you wish to apply.

The SA committee have been assisting the WA branch to get the 31st SA & WA Awards for Cinematography together as this is the first time the WA branch will host them on November 5, 2011. They are to be held at The Royal Perth Yacht Club, Matilda Bay, Perth with pre dinner drinks starting at 6:00pm.

Our branch will hold a concurrent awards celebration with a live feed from the venue so we can see who has won what. At our event we will be wined and dined, we'll present our sponsors plaques and a few local awards before crossing live to WA. This should be a great night so keep an eye out for more details on the ACS website or in our newsletters. Note the 2012 ACS State Awards for Cinematography will be held in Adelaide.

I would like to thank the outgoing committee for all they've done in the past year - it was a biggie with putting two awards shows on. I hope they'll come back for another stint in 2011 / 2012.

Membership Fees Now Due

Annual membership fees are now due. This financial year sees the launch of our new online payment system for the renewal of your annual membership to the Society and by now you should have received an eNews informing you that dues are now payable.

Simply log on with your user name and password. A link to do so is at the bottom of this section. Please check your details are correct and update if necessary.

On the right side of your page you will see your Membership Type, your Membership Status and a Renew Now blue link if you are unfinancial, which is most likely since we have not invoiced anyone for 2011/2012.

Click on Renew now and you will be asked to put your Username & Password again at the top of the page, select your Membership Type, enter the name on your credit card & it's 16 digit #. Then enter the credit card expiry month & year and the CSV # from the back of your card and then click Submit Payment only once.

Once the payment has been processed a new window will open notifying you your payment has been accepted and giving you the option to print a Tax Invoice which could be handy if you wish to claim your membership as a Tax Deduction.

We hope things run smoothly, but if you do have any difficulties we apologise in advance and will do our best to rectify any issues asap. Please contact me if you have any issues via the link below.

Should you wish to pay by cheque or money order please post to ACS SA Branch C/- PO Box 212 Kent Town SA 5071.

For EFT payments, contact me for our bank account details and make sure to put your name in the Reference line so we know who the payment is from.

No matter how you wish to pay you need to click the "renew now" link to find the amount due from your page on the ACS website.

When you make a payment using the new system you will be prompted to print off your invoice after the transaction. Please note this is the only time you can do this, these invoices are electronically generated at the time of payment and we have no way of reissuing them.

Vale - Kyme Hallion

Kyme started his career with NWS9 in Adelaide in the early 1980's. The highlight of his career was when he was awarded the prestigious Thorn Award for best National News camerawork for the Nine Network. He then joined Ellson Productions in Adelaide for a short period, shooting commercials, documentaries, news and sport before moving to Singapore in the early 1990's to take up a position as Camera Trainer for the Singapore Broadcasting Corporation (SBC).

Kyme met his wife to be, Hazlena, they married and had a daughter, and later twins - a boy and a girl. Missing the excitement of news at SBC, Kyme introduced himself to the BBC Asia Office, who were situated on on the SBC site. He was awarded a contract to shoot for BBC Asia and set up his production company, Hallion Productions, in the BBC offices.

The work covered assignments throughout the Asian Region, where he spent much of his time in Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, India, China and Hong Kong. The business expanded, enabling him to employ several cameramen and sound recordists for short term contracts from Australia. These included Jason Ellson and Paul Martino. He then joined forces with Asia Pacific Vision (APV), who were based in Hong Kong and operated the Singapore Branch of APV. This led to several contracts, including the BBC, to shoot for Reuters, WNTV, CNBC, Nine Network, SBS and ABC Australia. He worked in the Himalayas, Pakistan, China, Cambodia and also shot for the International Survivor series.

For several years his company was a major sponsor for Broadcast Asia, a conference held annually in Singapore. He arranged ouside broadcast facilities for major sporting events in the Asia Region. Operating from the Singapore Telecom Building in Singapore, he had a contract to uplink by suttletube BBC Asia programmes to the Asia Pacific Region. He covered the downfall of Indonesian President Suhario in 1998 for several international networks.

His relaxation came from Go Kart Racing with his son and family holidays to Kangaroo Island in South Australia. He was continually working in all forms of camerawork right up to his untimely death from a heart attack in July this year.

Kinemagraphe or not Kinemagraphe?

The Kinemagraphe newsletter name and masthead have been with our branch for a long time thanks to retired member Geoffrey Williams who originally came up with the name and design.

There have been some suggestions to modernise our newsletter name since going to online distribution and the eNews format.

So we want to know:
Do you wish to keep the newsletter name or change it and if you do want to change it we need to know what name you would prefer.

So click on the link below and vote to change or not to change and either suggest a new name or pick one from suggestions we have received so far:
Highlights Magazine, Images, SA Cinematographer, Spectrum, Field Of View, Showreel, Snippets, Slate or Circle of Confusion.
BTW the other states have: Viewfinder, Clips, Focus, POV & National: Short Ends

We look forward to receiving your positive or negative votes and your creative suggestions.

After we receive membership feedback a vote will be held at the AGM for change or not and for a new name if that is what the membership wants.

Trash n Treasure?

Our Trash n Treasure meet is to be held either early September or October. This will be the chance to sell / swap that bit of camera, sound, lighting or grip gear you no longer require or to find that elusive bit of equipment at a bargain price.

So rummage through your shed, cellar or wherever for that gear that's taking up valuable space and offload it at our ACS Trash n Treasure meet.

Please register your interest in our ACS Trash n Treasure meet by clicking on the link below.

Register Interest in Trash n Treasure Meet » - Please put: Registering for Trash n Treasure in subject line and, if you wish, in the body of the email what you have to sell or swap.

President's sign off

In our next newsletter we will let you know who your committee will be for 2011 / 2012. If there is anything you would like your branch to do, please let a committee member know.

In fact, any ideas for trade or fun nights would be greatly appreciated, as would pictures of you shooting in wild or exotic locations - with a caption, a few lines or even a short story.

We hope you all will support the awards being held in Perth and if you are thinking of heading that way maybe you can schedule your trip around November 5. I have heard already that there will be at least ten members going across to Perth.

Happy shooting,
Ernie Clark ACS - SA President
