From the President.
Warmest greetings ACS members, colleagues and sponsors,
So, we are now into June, our National Awards are behind us and we now prepare for the State and Territory Awards and Accreditation, both in a few months' time. So, if you are intending to apply for Accreditation, you have from now until the beginning of September to prepare your material. Discuss this with your Branch President or your Accreditation Panel Advisors and I am happy to assist at any time. Accreditation Applications will not be available until 1 September.
Also, the end of the financial year will see us discussing ongoing sponsorships with our National sponsors who have given so much support over not only the past twelve months but in some cases decades of collaboration. The Society remains grateful for their support and assures all our sponsors we will continue to return that support in any way we can.
Don’t forget we now have some new National Office Bearers; I remain as National President with Ben Allan ACS CSI as National Secretary. We are joined by Erika Addis in her third term as Vice President and first as National Treasurer along with Carolyn Constantine ACS as a Vice President.
I want to remind you all about mental health, particularly at this time with COVID - 19 again raising its very ugly head. Cinematographers are like any creative person who relies and depend on an accolade, a compliment, or positive feedback to give them reassurance until the phone rings with that next booking.
It’s a fine line, but people need to be aware that it’s not necessarily “what you say” it’s “how you say it”.
Let's again raise our awareness and look for the warning signs, ask people how they are and if they need a hand, offer yours, it could be as simple as that! The ACS feels very strongly about anything that could seriously affect the welfare of any of our ACS members and all crew members working honestly and diligently for a day’s pay to provide for their families.
So don’t hold back, ask the question "Are you ok?”
Please take care and be kind to each other.
Ron Johanson OAM ACS
National President

ACS WEB SITE RE-DEVELOPMENT
I have volunteered to take up the task of overseeing the revamping of the ACS website to bring it up to date in style and function. I must thank Victorian member Mark Morris for his diligent efforts in doing this job alone for many years. The previous Web Developer he used was an individual, rather than a company, and has chosen not to continue with the work.
I set about understanding what we have now and the hopes for future functionality. I discovered that our website is greatly more complex than one would expect, and further complicated by being written in a little known development language, Laravel. This was fine for the website's origins, but not appropriate for its ongoing expansion.
I have recommended to the Executive that:
- The main website be rebuilt using WordPress, a flexible web creation language that is universally known by Web Developers.
- Ambition Consultants, a Web Development company in Adelaide, be retained to do this work. (Ambition are run by Ineke Clark, Ernie Clark ACS's daughter.)
The Executive has approved these recommendations.
The rebuilding of the site will allow us to show a new modern face of the Society and I have accepted the kind offer of help from members Nick Payne and Mikey Hamer to help oversee the new look and style of the site.
NSW member Aleksei Vanamois has also kindly offered his assistance in overseeing the functionality of the new site.
Ambition Consultants are only just getting their teeth into the work, including getting their heads around Laravel, and I hope to be able to report on their progress and suggested timelines next month.

The ACS continues to be part of the Australian Screen Industry Guilds and to that end has recently been involved in sending our own submission to Government regarding Legislation to halve the drama expenditure requirement on pay TV which is currently being reviewed by a Senate Committee.

The interest in 9x7 is building up. The camera was used last week on Thirteen Lives for VFX shots and, in US, there are talks to use it on next Spielberg movie as well as sending it on SpaceX along with Tom Cruise to ISS in space. But, closer to home, a lot of really hard work on features, improvements, tests and million other things that normally would be taken care by a large team with multi-million dollar budget.

Greetings from rainy Prague.
I would like to congratulate everyone involved in this year's ACS awards
both the winners and organisers. I watched the awards online and wished I was there. It was great to see Terry Byrne being inducted into the ACS Hall of Fame.
However, we’re on a home stretch for the first season of The Wheel of Time, Amazon-Sony Pictures series where I am DOPing the 2nd Unit. We have one more week of filming to be done, with the sets spread over five stages and many many exteriors all around Czech Republic, Slovenia, Spain and Italy. It’s been a long hard slog interrupted by Covid several times as numbers rose here in Czecho. With numbers very low and lockdown easing
we should be starting season two in three months' time.
I hope all’s good your way. Take care and all the best
Mark
