NATIONAL E-NEWS - NOVEMBER 2021
From the President.

Greetings ACS members, sponsors and colleagues,

November is upon us, and with it comes the State and Territory Awards season, with NSW - ACT first cab off the rank.

Congratulations to all the winners at the NSW - ACT Awards for Cinematography and to all those who stepped up and put their work forward for judging. To the NSW Committee led by Carolyn Constantine ACS, you guys nailed it and of course with Ray Martin AM and the Geoff Anderson crew you have started the Awards season with a bang.

The recognition given to Valerie Taylor AM was so deserving, and to be able to see this wonderful lady on screen from Los Angeles as Guest of Honour was truly memorable, and to the “other” Taylor; Andy Taylor ACS congratulations on your Ross Wood ACS Award for a truly amazing story about the tragic Luna Park Fire.

To all our amazing sponsors thank you all so very much for your overwhelming and generous support.

Being the first Awards of the season, the event also enabled recognition of those granted Accreditation.

Accreditation was established in 1963 and is the highest honour bestowed on a member of the Society and enables the Accredited Cinematographer the right to use the letters ACS after his or her name. Accreditation can be a lengthy process, as there are many elements the Accreditation Panel takes into consideration. The standard of lighting both interior and exterior, the use of available light, composition, operating and camera movement. Consideration is also be given to the overall cinematic approach in relation to content and its relevance to the text. The work submitted must demonstrate more than just professional competence. Creativity and aesthetic innovation are among the other qualities looked for by the Accreditation panel.

This year there were 21 applications for Accreditation and from these applicants, there were 10 remarkable cinematographers across a number of genres granted Accreditation in 2021:

Aaron Smith VIC 428
Chris Bland NSW 429
Craig Hansen NSW 430
Dom West NSW 431
Florian Emmercih NSW 432
Justine Kerrigan NSW 433
Mark Broadbent QLD 434
Shelley Farthing-Dawe VIC 435
Simon Smith NSW 436
Toby Phillips VIC 437

Finally we sadly announce that we lose the talents of the amazing Heidi Tobin, after almost 17 years, as not only our AC Magazine Associate Editor and current ACS E news editor, but in many ways the glue that binds the ACS together. Thank you Heidi you will be missed and on behalf of everyone we wish you well in the next phase of your business life. You have served the Society diligently and with great purpose and dedication and we will all miss that big smile of yours and the way you said with much joy “G’day mate”.

This is a bumper issue of the National e news, so I trust you enjoy the read.

Until next time

And that wraps up TROPPO, Season 1.
With over 2800 setups on main unit, multiple splinter, action and 2nd units, through storms, mud, ticks, snakes, heat, hail, water, wind and endless step counts for no other reason than getting better shots for the drama…..it’s been a wonderful journey bringing some great scripts from @yolandaramke to fruition. Such a committed cast and crew, and a demanding gig brings some top notch work to be very proud of - when everyone leaves nothing left in the tank. Kudos to the amazing camera, LX and grips departments, where everyone brought something else to improve the canvas that much more, bunch of brilliant people. To the directors, and of course the setup DP Mr Marty McGrath ACS @martymeme, Thank you for the guidance and open collaboration as every day brought collaborative new creative solutions, so such a privilege to be part of a great team.

Season 1 TROPPO, coming in Feb 2022.
