National eNews and much much more....

Message from the President

This will be the final National eNews for 2017 and I want to say thanks to our editor, Lizz Vernon for her amazing contribution each month, along with all the members and sponsors who have contributed articles and information for the benefit of everyone who receives our National eNews.

We are a National Society steeped in history and tradition, but we are always looking for ways to improve our governance and our administrative processes for the benefit of all, therefore we welcome your input.

Our ACS Branches are a dedicated group who all work tirelessly for the Society and it's members, and this is evident in the number of special events held by each Branch at various times during the year. Also, let’s not forget those Branches who hosted ACS Awards presentations; Northern Territory, Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria who again ran extremely successful events recognising the fantastic work from our ACS members. Of course, Awards such as these don’t just happen, it takes a truly dedicated hard-working group to organise these Awards. My thanks to the organising Committees for the fantastic job they have done in bringing all these Awards to us.

There were a number of “special awards” received this year, of course ACS Accreditation was one. It was first granted in 1963 and this year there were 18 applications and of those 8 were granted Accreditation, which takes the total number of Accredited members to 387.

Abraham Joffe ACS ~ #380, NSW
Aaron Gully ACS ~ #381, SA
Philip Rang ACS ~ #382, NSW
Carolyn Constantine ACS ~ #383, NSW
Zoe White ACS ~ #384, NSW
Bruce Young ACS ~ #385, NSW
Pawel Achtel ACS ~ #386, TAS
Kieran Fowler ACS ~ #387, NSW

In 2017 we added 7 distinguished Life Members; Simon Ackerman ACS, Peter Hannan ACS BSC, Dean Semler AM ACS ASC, John Seale AM ACS ASC, Don McAlpine ACS ASC, Russell Boyd ACS ASC and Mick Fanning. Quite an impressive list, I'm sure you'll agree.

Add to that the recipients of the Ron Windon ACS Contribution Award presented to those who have contributed to the well-being and growth of the Society over a long period and continue to represent the Society and it's members by displaying exemplary service; Tony O’Loughlan past Queensland Branch President and Warwick Field ACS, the current Victorian President.

This year a new, special role was created to recognise the service to the Society by David Brill AM ACS and that was the role as our very first ACS Ambassador to increase the awareness and promote the values of the Society.

We must remember Ron Windon ACS and Lou Irving ACS who we lost in the latter half of the year. Two very fine men who both played key roles in the history and the advancement of the Society. It was our beloved Ron Windon who created our Awards system and who has led the Society with great dignity as a Federal President as well as in recent years acting as our ACS Historian, which included his writing over a number of years the wonderful “Image Makers" ACS pocket history. Many of us always deferred to Ron for his counsel and wisdom and Louis Irving was one of nature’s gentlemen and a brilliant and innovative cinematographer, who cared deeply for all those he came into contact with.

We will continue to provide members with a platform for future growth with our Drew Llewelyn ACS Camerimage Scholarship, the John Leake OAM ACS Emerging Cinematographer grant and the ongoing ACS CineKids initiative.

We will also ensure the Society listens and is a voice for all members, as the leadership group and the National Executive take these responsibilities very seriously. We now have a new ACS Policy in place along with a detailed Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct which was agreed upon at our recent EGM, called specifically to discuss the recent well reported instances of sexual harassment, bullying and discrimination both internationally and here at home

ACS HARASSMENT, DISCRIMINATION & BULLYING POLICY

It is the policy of the Australian Cinematographers Society (ACS) that every member of the Society and the greater Film and Television industry has the right to work in an environment free from any gender, race, disability, religious, sexual orientation discrimination or harassment and bullying of any kind. This includes any verbal, emotional, physical, cyber or sexual harassment.

The Society will not tolerate any behaviour that is considered threatening or dis-respectful towards or by any of our members or guests.

~ ACS National Executive, December 2017

Please take a moment to review the current ACS Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct »

The Society continues to collaborate with the other Guilds on many diverse topics that have an impact on our members and the broader industry. We are very fortunate to be part of this group which includes SPA, the Directors Guild, MEAA, the Production Designers, AWG, the Editors Guild and many more outstanding organisations and people who work with great zeal for their members and the industry. It is a great privilege to work alongside them and be part of such an esteemed group.

My sincere thanks to each and every member and all those who give so freely of their time and expertise to work on a committee at the Branch level. Also may I take this opportunity to thank our National Executive who also give so much to the Society. To our sponsors, many who have been with us for many years, our sincere thanks and one hopes that the New Year will prove to be a successful and fruitful one for all concerned. Don’t forget the National Awards will be hosted by the Queensland Branch in Brisbane on Saturday, 5th May. Hold the date!!!

The editorial standard and the design quality of AC Magazine continues to astound me, so in particular I thank AC Magazine Chair, Ted Rayment ACS and our excellent AC Magazine editor James Cunningham, along with Heidi Tobin, Brad Sampson and Mylene Ludgate for their enthusiasm and dedication in producing this world-class publication.

INQUIRY REPORT - With thanks to James Cheatley from SPA.

Last week, the House Standing Committee on Communications and the Arts released the Report on the Inquiry into the Australian film and television industry.
There’s a lot of good stuff in there for our industry and some things that aren’t so great. But on the whole, it’s a positive report.
Enjoy the read!!

URGENT DRONE INFORMATION FOR ALL ACS MEMBERS

Close friends, a talented Singaporean cinematographer, and a Malaysian born Executive Producer (ex. National Geographic Channel Asia’s EP) are currently serving 2 months jail time in Myanmar for flying a drone in the country.

They are facing further charges, much more grave for simply bringing the drone into the country, breaching Myanmar’s import/export laws.
The case is ongoing, they’re back in front of the judge today where the talk is they may receive as much as 3-5 years if found guilty.
The general feeling is Myanmar is they are making an example of them over the Rohingya situation.
It’s well worth a big word of caution to all ACS members & all camera crews to check local laws, & take a moment before agreeing to requests.
Tragic for both of them & their families.

Message from The Australian Camera Department | December 8th 2017

The ACS supports this initiative below from The Australian Camera Department regarding the production of an industry Rate Card for the camera department. We ask that you read the information and give it your consideration.

Dear Australian Camera Department Personnel,

For all of the DOP's, although there are no rates listed for you in the card, I thought it would still be beneficial to have you informed on this matter, and to have your support is greatly appreciated.

For those that may be hearing of this for the first time, the idea behind this initiative was to:

a) Bring the camera department together as a unified group with the aim to...
b) Protect our rates for the future, and also our industry by making work within it viable for all of us. This includes achieving fair rates for all.
c) Establish a transparent and standard method for charging.
d) Educate newcomers, producers and productions as to how we value ourselves.
e) Create a standard 10hr day rate across the board for commercial productions, and hence eliminating the 10 for 8 deals. (Please note that this specifically requires some compromise from all of us, but I believe it is worth it).

Longford Lyell Award Recipient - PHILLIP NOYCE

Acclaimed Australian director Phillip Noyce was today announced as the recipient of the AACTA Longford Lyell Award – Australia’s highest screen accolade.

The Award will be presented to Phillip at the 7th AACTA Awards Ceremony presented by Foxtel on Wednesday 6 December at The Star Event Centre in Sydney, telecast at 8:30pm on Channel 7.

First presented in 1968, the Longford Lyell Award is a tribute to Australian film pioneer Raymond Longford and his partner in filmmaking and life, Lottie Lyell. The Award is the highest honour the AACTA can bestow and recognises an individual who has made a truly outstanding contribution to the enrichment of Australia’s screen environment and culture.

Noyce joins an illustrious group of Australian directors to have received the accolade, including Peter Weir, Fred Schepisi, Charles Chauvel, Dr George Miller and Ken G. Hall, the first Australian to win an Oscar®.

“I’m humbled to receive an award that bears the names of two of Australia’s greatest filmmakers,” said Noyce. “And I’m humbled to join the ranks of those previously honoured with this award, particularly Barry Jones and Philip Adams, who were so prominent in reviving our film industry in the late 1960’s, my friend and directing mentor Ken G. Hall, and Dr George Miller, who has taught us all so much with his cinema magic.”

“With an ongoing career spanning 48 years, more than 55 credits to his name and three AFI Awards among his long list of accolades, Phillip Noyce is truly one of Australia’s greatest directors,” said AFI | AACTA CEO Damian Trewhella. “On behalf of the Academy, it is our pleasure to recognise Phil for his role as a director and as a key contributor to the reputation and quality of Australian cinema.”

Phillip started his career making self-funded short films in the late 1960s. For three years he managed the Sydney Filmmakers Co-op, which screened the short films of Australia's fledgling filmmakers in a makeshift cinema in downtown Sydney. In 1973 he was one of the inaugural students of the Australian Film, Television and Radio School, studying alongside the likes of Gillian Armstrong and Chris Noonan.

After working on a number of shorts and feature films, his breakthrough came in 1978 with the critically acclaimed NEWSFRONT. The film swept the 1978 AFI Awards, winning eight Awards including two Awards for Noyce: Best Director and Best Original Screenplay (shared with Anne Brooksbank and Bob Ellis).

Ten years later, Hollywood came calling following the release of Noyce’s psychological thriller DEAD CALM. The film kick-started Noyce’s international career, along with those of his leading actors, Nicole Kidman and Sam Neill.

Noyce has gone on to work with some of the world’s leading actors, including: Harrison Ford and James Earl Jones in CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER (1994); Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie in THE BONE COLLECTOR (1999); Sir Michael Caine in THE QUIET AMERICAN (2002); Hilary Swank in MARY AND MARTHA (2013); and Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges in THE GIVER (2014).

Noyce’s eclectic career has seen him direct a diverse range of genres across film and television, from blockbuster action films to Oscar®-nominated dramas, as well as some of Australia’s most culturally significant films. From his first feature film BACKROADS (1977) to the multiple AFI Award-winning RABBIT PROOF FENCE (2002), Noyce has continued to challenge audiences with films that highlight cultural issues such as racism, Indigenous culture, apartheid and terrorism.
