Warwick Thornton ACS: the Spotlight of the ASC
|
|
Congratulations to Warwick Thornton ACS on winning the Spotlight Award at the 38th American Society of Cinematographers Awards at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. The award recognises outstanding cinematography in independent films that will otherwise miss out.
This award continues the accolades for his cinematography in the film The New Boy , which he also wrote and directed.
Recently accredited at the Queensland and Northern Territory awards in November, Warwick mentioned that his learning of cinematography accelerated when he received a copy of the second edition of the ASC's American Cinematographer Manual a friend had found in a Tasmanian bookshop. This gave him an introduction to our craft, and he says he values the collaborative nature of learning and development between fellow cinematographers.

Congratulations to Daryl Binning for your OAM

Unfortunately, we overlooked a worthy recipient of an OAM in this year's Australia Day Honours list: former WA ACS President and ACS Life Member and Hall of Fame inductee Daryl Binning OAM ACS.
He began a long and distinguished career as a newsreel cinematographer. While working as a gaffer and cinematographer, he also developed sound transfer and recording equipment and operated location lighting trucks.
Daryl was instrumental in setting up the ACS in WA with President Alex McPhee SNR. Daryl served as secretary before taking the State President's role.
Daryl joined David Parer OAM ACS in receiving an award this year.
An apology for missing you, Daryl, and thanks to Harry Smith for picking it up.
