Only around 7 weeks to our ACS National Awards for Cinematography, so follow the links below to book your seats.

Also, don't forget the other important ACS initiatives for members that will be closing on the 7th April.

The 2019 DREW LLEWELYN ACS CAMERIMAGE SCHOLARSHIP - Supported by FUJINON FUJIFILM
Established in 2015 with the support of the Llewelyn family, the Queensland Branch and the National Executive, 'The Drew Llewelyn ACS Camerimage Scholarship', enables one lucky ACS member to attend Camerimage in Poland with an amount of $4000.00 towards flights and accommodation, along with other introductions within the Camerimage festival itself.

The Scholarship will be administered by the National ACS Executive and will be in place for a 5-year period, which commenced in 2015. It will be open to financial Cinematographer & Camera Crew members of the Society and will be decided by a sub committee of peers after submitting a simple application explaining Why you want to travel to Camerimage and how you see it having long-term benefits for you.

RJ out and about representing the ACS again, this time he was in Serbia with our very own ACS Ambassador David Brill AM ACS

Also this year our ACS Major National sponsor FUJINON FUJIFILM have come on board to support the Drew Llewelyn ACS Scholarship by offering to the recipient a FUJIFILM X-T3 body with an MKX18-55mm T2.9 lens. A truly fantastic piece of kit that will be of enormous benefit to the winner of the Scholarship. The JOHN LEAKE OAM ACS EMERGING CINEMATOGRAPHER AWARD - Supported by LACIE.
The Australian Cinematographers Society (ACS) created the John Leake OAM ACS Emerging Cinematographer Award in 2010 in honour of ACS co- founder and industry icon, John Leake OAM ACS (1927-2009). John began his cinematographic career as a 15-year-old with Movietone News in 1944 before moving on to Supreme Sound Studios. He served as both NSW President and Federal President of the ACS.
The Award provides a cash prize of $2,400 to an Emerging cinematographer who is either currently studying cinematography at a tertiary institution, or working in the film industry, and is a current member of the ACS. The prize can be used for any educational, training, or professional work that will further their skills and career.

According to ACS National President Ron Johanson OAM ACS, "This incentive has been a total success, fostering young cinematographers in the pursuit of their career goals"

The 2019 recipient will be announced at the ACS National Awards for Cinematography in Melbourne on Saturday 18th May.

BOB MILLER ~ ACS TECHNICAL & INNOVATION ACHIEVEMENT AWARD 2019

NOMINATIONS ARE NOW OPEN FOR The Bob Miller Award, named after the inventor of the world's first fluid action tripod head, Bob Miller.

The award is presented at the ACS Annual National Awards for Cinematography and comprises $1,000.00 in cash and a $2000.00 Miller voucher enabling the recipient to purchase any Miller Camera Support product at 40% discount off list price directly from Miller.

In addition, Miller has donated an LP54 in a wooden case and a special Bob Miller Award plaque, which will reside in the ACS headquarters in North Sydney. The name of the award recipient will be engraved on the LP 54 Classic plaque, every year, in perpetuity. The recipient will also receive a framed, signed plaque to commemorate their win.

NOMINATIONS WILL CLOSE on APRIL 12th 2019.

Nominees must be financial ACS members who have contributed in the 24 months prior to the 2019 Awards by way of technical and/or innovative practical ideas that have helped the industry to advance.

Send your nomination by no later than APRIL 12th, with a detailed description of their technical or innovative achievement to ACS National President; Ron Johanson OAM ACS for consideration.

will take place in Melbourne at the Plaza Ballroom on Saturday, 18 May, with a number of other special soon to be announced events, as part of the celebrations.
All our Awards category nominees, as Gold-Award winners at their Branch Awards will be acknowledged, and all members are encouraged to attend and support our Australian cinematographers and their outstanding work.

2019 SAE ATOM Awards

The 2019 SAE ATOM Awards are now calling for entries! Since 1982, the Awards celebrate the best of Australian and New Zealand screen content from the education sector and screen industry.

This year the Awards returns with forty-five categories covering diverse media including feature-length films, television programs, animation, educational resources and new media such as web series, apps and games.

Entries close at midday AEST, Friday 7 June.

Have an idea for a short film that is "Forever Unexpected"? AACTA and MINI have teamed up to help make your idea a reality!

Entries are now open for AACTA Pitch: Forever Unexpected presented by MINI, a national short film pitching competition, and we are looking to hear from filmmakers with unique, creative and fun ideas for short films that are inspired by MINI's "Forever Unexpected" manifesto.

Launched last year, AACTA Pitch supports the next generation of Australian screen industry talent, encouraging new ideas and providing the invaluable opportunity for up-and-coming filmmakers to hone their skills by pitching their ideas to industry professionals.

Up to five finalists will be selected to participate in the AACTA Pitch: Forever Unexpected Live Final event held in Sydney on Monday 3 June. Each finalist will have the opportunity to pitch their short film and convince the judging panel, in front of a live audience, that they have the best idea in the room.

Finalists will be pitching for the chance to win:

  • $5,000 cash;
  • $15,000 towards the production of their short film;
  • A complimentary MINI vehicle for the duration of the shoot;
  • Post-production support from Spectrum Films to the value of $2,500;
  • Tickets to the 2019 AACTA Awards presented by Foxtel; and
  • Invaluable feedback and mentoring opportunities with the judging panel.

HOW TO ENTER

Entries for AACTA Pitch: Forever Unexpected presented by MINI are now open!

Entry is free, and entrants are required to provide a production summary of their short film idea and how it incorporates the "Forever Unexpected" manifesto, along with other supporting material.

AACTA welcomes everyone with an idea for a live action, scripted short film to enter, and encourages concepts from creators and teams from diverse and under-represented backgrounds.

Entries are not required to include or refer to a MINI vehicle, however entries must incorporate or be inspired by the MINI "Forever Unexpected" Manifesto.

Entries close Tuesday 7 May, 2019 at 5pm AEST

Lighting for Drama Intensive (5-days)
The aim of this five day course is to teach basic lighting skills in cinematography and how they apply to the visualization of a story or concept. The ASC Welcomes Brad Shield as a New Active Member

At my first job on a film set, I was told to make my way up to the lighting grid and throw streamers at a giant chicken for a KFC commercial, says Brad Shield, ASC, ACS. "I have loved the business ever since!

The Australian native began his career in the film industry at Jumbuck Productions in Brisbane. As the junior, he says, you did everything.This included painting cycs, washing the boss's car, gripping, electrics and assisting the camera department.

Stratton's classic film picks return for Sydney Film Festival (5-16 June) with the retrospective Essential Australian Women Directors - 10 Trailblazers selected by David Stratton.

This year the iconic film critic highlights the work of 10 remarkable Australian directors working between the 1930s and now, from pioneering 1930 film The Cheaters (screened in its original silent form with live piano score) through to trailblazing contemporary films like Beautiful Kate, which garnered Andrew Commis the ACS Cinematographer of the Year award in 2010.
