ACS SESSIONS @ MEDTECH EXPO

ACS SESSIONS ON FRIDAY,
19TH JUNE
9.00am – 5.30pm

Session 1. 9.30 – 10.30am
MEASURING COLOUR REPRODUCTION

Duration 60.00

Pawel Achtel ACS, as a member of Technical Committee of the Giant Screen Cinema Association (GSCA) has designed an accurate and objective way to measure colour reproduction accuracy of cinema cameras. In plain English, the process tests the range of colours that a camera can see and how accurately it can reproduce them. To make the test more accurate, Pawel uses a laboratory spectroscope, which can project all visible monochromatic colours (think the colours of the rainbow) directly onto the camera’s sensor. Such an approach removes a number of variables, inaccuracies and subjective interpretation that are usually introduced through lighting, lenses, dyes, and other factors associated with the traditional way of using colour charts. In July 2018, Pawel, with assistance from the Australian Cinematographers Society Brisbane evaluated the Sony Venice, Arri Alexa LF, RED Monstro, and Panavision DXL2. Results of that test will be shared during this session by Pawel Achtel ACS.

Session 2. 11.00am – 12.00noon
SHOOTING WITH LARGE SCREEN SENSORS

Duration 60 minutes

Cinematographers Velinda Wardell ACS & Tom Gleeson
Presently Arri, Canon, Panavision, Red and Sony are offering larger than 35mm sensors. After nearly 100 years of cinema and TV production on 35mm do we need to change our shooting format? Is there a compelling reason for change?
The ACS Technical committee has shot tests and gone down the rabbit hole on large format shooting so we can spell out exactly what it means to “go large”.

Session 3. 1.30pm – 2.45pm
DIVERSITY & INCLUSION (Creating Diversity on Set) Duration 60 minutes
A broad panel conversation around diversity and inclusion to include cinematographers of different backgrounds, gender and ethnicity. How can we make our crews look more like the world we live in?
Moderator: Erika Addis with 5 guest panel members. TBC

Session 4. 3.15pm – 4.45pm
Peter James talks about “Ladies in Black”.

Duration 90 minutes

This session from acclaimed cinematographer, Peter James ACS ASC is about the making of a Feature film “Ladies in Black” and Peter’s long term collaboration with Director, Bruce Beresford. Also during the session, Peter will refer to other genres including; short films, documentaries and commercials. Peter will talk about how a lot of the problems and responses, across the genres are the same and we, as cinematographers need to understand how to relate and communicate with a diverse group of people.
