From the President.
Dear ACS members and colleagues,
Two very notable events occurred recently; the National Awards judging was held in Adelaide supervised by the SA Branch, and thanks go to Ernie Clark ACS, Mylene Ludgate, and David Tang for their incredible support over the three days.
Thanks also to our esteemed panel; Malcolm Ludgate ACS, Susan Stitt ACS, Henry Pierce ACS, Roger Lanser ACS, and myself. There were around 162 entries across all categories and the standard entries seem to get better each year. As the Awards get closer we will release the full list of nominees and then on the Awards night on Saturday, May 1 we will announce the recipients at the gala presentation in Canberra at the National Gallery.
Speaking of Awards, things are well underway with the special events that will take place as part of the National Awards for Cinematography, and they include:
PANAVISION presents Q&A Screening moderated by Kim Batterham ACS Friday 6.00pm – 9.30pm @ Palace Electric Cinema, New Acton Nishi, 2 Phillip Law St,
ROSCO – LEITZ PUB NIGHT Friday 9.30pm – 11.30pm @ Speakeasy Bar – QT Hotel. ·
MEET THE NOMINEES Saturday 10.00am – 12.30pm. A Q&A session moderated by Kim Batterham ACS brings together as many of the nominated Cinematographers across a broad range of genres.
Bookings will be open soon and you will be able to register for these events and the Awards presentation itself. So watch this space closely!
The National Executive comprising delegates from the Branches attended a General Meeting held on Tuesday, March 2 via Zoom. Many items were covered in order to attempt to have the main AGM held in May to run more efficiently and effectively. The meeting itself was, in my mind a successful venture and I thank our National Secretary, Ben Allan ACS CSI for his diligence in bringing this to the fore.
Unfortunately, we have lost the services of our National Treasurer, Mylene Ludgate who has been part of the Executive for the last 12 years but has decided to concentrate on personal things and her work for the SA Branch. I cannot thank you enough Mylene for your amazing capacity to take on the position in the first place. I congratulate you wholeheartedly and we will all miss you. Let us not forget that Ernie Clark ACS will not be nominating for the position of National Vice President this year which is almost unthinkable. My thanks and admiration to you Ernesto for the last thirteen years, you have led with dignity, wisdom and the respect you have garnered is so deserved.
If you wish to nominate for the position of Vice President, I would be delighted to hear from you.
I want to acknowledge the sad passing of Queensland Accredited member, Gene Moller ACS. I worked a lot with Gene during the eighties in his capacity both as a focus puller and a skilful operator and always found him to be a quiet achiever, a very hard worker who went on to shoot numerous commercials and television drama. Our thoughts go out to his daughter Imogen, mother Anne, and sister Devi, along with his extended family. RIP Geno.
Another piece of sad news is the sad passing of legendary Melbourne gaffer, Robbie Young. I first met Robbie in the late 60’s when he was at Cambridge Films, he was an amiable and very friendly guy, who was at the top of his game. The ACS sends our condolences to his family. RIP Robbie.
I remind each of you to consider your colleagues and reach out if you feel they need a helping hand.
Until next time
Ron Johanson OAM ACS
National President
