MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Greetings ACS members, colleagues and friends,

This is the final edition of our National e news for 2018.

November saw us celebrating our various ACS Awards for Cinematography presentations. Some links to the results and photos from those presentations can be found below. More to follow.

VIC / TAS Piccies from the big night... »

I have said it before and say it again, that our ACS Awards are unique in that they recognise a broad cross section of genres, something we should be very proud of. This gives all cinematographers the opportunity to have their work viewed by their peers, not only during the judging process but by the audience at our Awards presentations, something appreciated by entrants and guests alike.

Speaking of Awards, the 2nd IMAGO INTERNATIONAL AWARDS for CINEMATOGRAPHY will be held in Belgrade, Serbia on Saturday 16th March 2019.

With as many as 53 countries nominating films in Feature films, Student, TV Drama and Documentary it promises to be a busy period for the various judging panels, of which a number of our ACS members are included.

Let's keep our fingers crossed for our ACS nominated cinematographers and their excellent work. Read more about the IMAGO Awards below.

In recent times the Society has been in discussion with the Branches regarding two very important issues:

1. The potential changes to our Articles of Association and 2.The ACS support of the SPA Code of Conduct. Two very important subjects that the Branches are working through with their members and I should be in a position to report the outcomes during December.

Your ACS continues to grow and to foster opportunities for our members, but we must all remain mindful of the fact that we are all individuals, and as such, we all need to respect each other as individuals. The ACS has a strong Policy in place regarding any harassment and bullying which occurs due to a lack of respect, and we will continue to monitor and deal with any infringement of this Policy. We are also well aware that there are some of our members who deal with depression and anxiety on a daily basis. I urge everyone to be prepared to offer support to any colleague who you think may need some assistance. This gesture could well be the greatest gift that you will ever give.

We have come a long way, and as your National President I will continue to ensure the lines of communication are always open, and we take every measure to enable the Society to continue to strengthen and to grow. We must remain diligent and committed to the principles and ideology of the Society, but we must move with the times, and we must listen and be prepared to change if the need arises.

I would like to thank all the Branch Presidents and committees, along with the ACS Board members and our National and Branch sponsors for all their valuable input and support and I take this moment to wish you all a Happy Christmas and a holiday season rich with the opportunity to spend time with family and friends.

Until next time…

Ron Johanson OAM ACS

How Marvel-Netflix Created New York City On Set With Rosco SoftDrops®

The Marvel-Netflix shows Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist all have two things in common – they’re all set in New York City, and they all used Rosco SoftDrops® to create the cityscape backgrounds of their interior sets. Cinematographer Manuel Billeter, Production Designer Loren Weeks and Art Director Toni Barton, share how they collaborated with Rosco and explain why they chose SoftDrop to create the realistic background scenery required to capture the essence of New York City on screen.

The 2nd IMAGO INTERNATIONAL AWARDS for CINEMATOGRAPHY

In late October, the call for entries into the the 2nd IMAGO INTERNATIONAL AWARDS for CINEMATOGRAPHY, which will be held in Belgrade, Serbia in March 2019 was announced. Each IMAGO member Society is invited to nominate a single entry in the Feature film category and 1 each in Student, TV Drama and Documentaries. I can confirm that our nominations based on our 2018 National Awards results will be:

STUDENT
Nathaniel Kelly (NT)
~ Curriculum
DOCUMENTARIES
Abraham Joffe ACS (NSW)
~ Tales By Light - Life and Death
TV DRAMA
Geoffrey Hall ACS (SA)
~ Wake In Fright 'Episode 2’
FEATURE FILMS
Greig Fraser ACS ASC (VIC)
~ Lion

IMAGO President, Paul Rene Roestad FNF added,

“For the first time ever, at the 2019 IMAGO Awards, we are now including the Student Film Award category, entries for which can be submitted by a member Society after selection from its country’s film schools.

Imago are also introducing the Emerging Young Cinematographer Award and the winner of this exciting new award will be chosen by the Presidents of each Society. IMAGO is very proud to present the 2019 Imago International Awards for Cinematography and we wish all participants the very best of luck.”

The addition of the Emerging Young Cinematographer category is of great importance, and I ask each of our Branch Presidents to contact me should they have someone they would like to include to be nominated.

The basic criteria is that the nomination can be made by the society’s President. The cinematographer must be no older than 32 years of age at the time of entry and the feature film, documentary or TV drama must be his/her first one

IMAGO will be in touch with each National/Country President in the coming weeks with more information, and I will keep the Branch Presidents informed.

Enjoy the Awards presentations in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne and support our ACS cinematographers at every opportunity.

Record Australian line-up at Sundance

A record six Australian feature films will screen at the Sundance Film Festival, with Animals, Judy and Punch, Little Monsters, Top End Wedding and I Am Mother having their world premieres in the Utah-based festival, which runs from January 24 – February 3.

In addition, Jennifer Kent’s The Nightingale will have its North American premiere after winning the special jury prize and the Marcello Mastroianni award for best new young performer for Baykali Ganambar at this year’s Venice Film Festival.

That surpasses the previous record of five in 1997. Sundance has been a great launching pad for Australian productions including David Michod’s Animal Kingdom in 2010 (World Cinema Jury Prize), Greg McLean’s Wolf Creek in 2005, Scott Hicks’ Shine in 1996, Kitty Green’s Casting JonBenet (2017) and Nash Edgerton’s Mr Inbetween (2018).

“The six films selected by Sundance display the array of stories Australians now tell and the demand for our screen content internationally,” said Screen Australia CEO Graeme Mason.

“The fact that all the films revolve around central female characters, and half of the films are directed by women, is a milestone for the Australian industry. Change is coming – slowly, but surely.”
