Message from the President

Two Presidents Ron Johanson OAM ACS & Tahvo Hirvonen FSC in Finland for the Inaugaral Imago Cinematography Awards

Hi everyone,

As you may be aware I have just returned from Helsinki, Finland where I attended the very first IMAGO International Awards for Cinematography presentation along with participating as part of the IMAGO Board and as the representative of the ACS at the IMAGO Annual General Assembly which saw almost all 53 member countries in attendance to review the past 12 months and to discuss the future. There were 4 new countries accepted as full members; Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Peru. IMAGO is such a diverse group, and the opportunity to meet our fellow cinematographers from around the globe is truly a positive acclamation of IMAGO and all it stands for.

I will in the coming weeks write a detailed report once I receive the minutes of the Assembly, and it will be available for you all.

But really, it was all about the IMAGO Awards which were held on the Saturday evening at the Swedish - Finnish Cultural Centre on the island of Hanasaari, quite close to Helsinki. It proved to be the perfect location for not only the Awards presentation but also the other related IMAGO business on the agenda.

The recipients of all the Awards in the very first IMAGO International Awards for Cinematography were presented at a gala ceremony on Saturday evening at Hanisaari - Convention Centre in Espoo, Finland hosted by Tahvo Hirvonen the President of the Finnish Society of Cinematographers. It was a wonderful celebration of cinematography and cinematographers in an environment of collaboration and above all……friendship. One of the highlights was seeing our very own Pieter de Vries ACS present the winner of the Documentary category with his IMAGO Award. Piet was as eloquent as ever, and was seen later in the evening celebrating the life out of the party. Apart from the ACS there was another Aussie element and that was the support given by two of our ACS National sponsors; SILVERTRAK and WELL ABOVE. Thanks to both Christian and Salvatore for their generous involvement.

Our London based NSW member Marc Swadel has written a fantastic report which I include in the links below for your reading pleasure.

I want to remind you all about the ACS Policy regarding harassment and bullying which the Society takes very seriously and is determined to ensure all our members can work in an environment free from these negative elements.

Harassment or Bullying

It is the policy of the Australian Cinematographers Society (ACS) that each and every member of the Society and the greater Film and Television industry has the basic right to work in an environment free from any gender bias, harassment or bullying of any kind.

The Society will not tolerate any behaviour that is considered threatening or dis-respectful towards any of our members.

MEAA SPA joint statement on sexual harassment

The Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance (MEAA) and Screen Producers Australia (SPA) condemn workplace sexual harassment and commit to zero tolerance of sexual harassment regardless of the identity of the perpetrator.

Recent reports on the extent of sexual harassment in the media and entertainment industries are alarming. We commend the victims who have courageously told their stories, as well as those journalists whose work has brought this issue to light.

Every person has the right to a workplace free from sexual harassment. We encourage those who have suffered from harassment to seek support and advice. We encourage everyone in the industry to promote a safe working environment where all people are treated fairly and equally in word and action. We also encourage members to read Screen Australia’s fact sheet to help understand what is unacceptable behaviour and what steps can be taken.

As part of current review the Screen Safety Code, MEAA and SPA commit to the inclusion of policies aimed at preventing sexual harassment.
