Greetings ACS friends and colleagues, ACS AWARDS ENTRIES OPEN 1st AUGUST So here it is August 1st tomorrow and entries will be OPEN for ALL ACS State and Territory Awards for Cinematography. Lets not forget that the NSW Branch once again manned the ACS Booth at SMPTE 2017, and my thanks on behalf of us all go to David Lewis ACS, Roger Lanser ACS, David Wakeley ACS, Ted Rayment ACS, Lizz Vernon, Eirini Alligianis, Franc Biffone, Sidat de Silva, , Carolyn Constantine, Bob Harding ACS, visiting Victorian member, Vanessa Cox, Alexis Vanemois, Anna Howard ACS and sincere apologies if I have forgotten anyone. It was a fantastic week, and thanks also to SMPTE and Expertise Events for providing us with a Booth again this year. There was much to see and experience apart from the amazing stands and new technologies on display, including many friends of the Society dropping by for a yarn, including David Gribble ACS, John and Louise Seale, Michelle Pizanis, James Puli SOC, Guy Furner ACS, Andy Taylor ACS, Abraham Joffe, Pawel Achtel, my old mate Robb Shaw Velzen ACS (aka The Hyphen), Garry Phillips ACS, Nick Buchner, Ray Martin to mention but a few. The ACS booth was quite a hub!

There were various after SMPTE social events hosted by ARRI, FUJINON & MILLER, RED among many others. Brett Smith and the ARRI crew invited the NSW Branch to hold their customary "3rd Thursday Drop In" as part of the ARRI Birthday celebrations at a nearby hotel and we were treated to a very informative presentation from Award winning young cinematographer Dale Alexander Bremner. Congratulations to ARRI as their SMPTE Booth was voted Best at the Show. AC Magazine editor James Cunningham was on the Videocraft booth interviewing John Seale AM ACS ASC about his career and his incredible catalogue of work. The interview was streamed live to the SMPTE attendees and others and will be available on the ACS web site soon. There was a guest operator who was grateful the shot was a lock off! ACS Accreditation submissions for 2017 are now closed, and I wish each and every applicant all the very best with the Accreditation screenings at the ACS HQ. This month sees a number of our Branch AGMs taking place, and I know there is likely to be several changes of key administration. To all of those that have contributed, some over a period of many years I thank you for your incredible support and your service to the members and the Society. Until next time Ron Johanson OAM ACS National President

Andy Hyde reports back on CineGear
Cinegear 2017 Paramount Theatre, Los Angeles, June 1-4. By Andrew Hyde The 22nd annual Cinegear Expo concluded recently under magnificent mid-summer LA skies and the ACS was ever present, this time with a modest, yet enthusiastically manned booth; a small table with two strategically positioned large Mexican style umbrellas, complementing our relaxed but stylish and ever-welcoming presence! The pre-event press released promised that the expo would take place within a relaxed Hollywood studio environment, an oxymoron perhaps, but after enduring the twenty-minute drive across the infamous LA freeway system, the relative calm of the New York Street Lot (a soundstage replica of several streets of Manhattan) at the centre of the sprawling Paramount facility was welcome relief. The event got underway with more than 300 exhibits from across the breathed of the industry, ....Full report via the links section.
