Message from the President
Greetings ACS friends and colleagues, Vale - Ossie Emery ACS (1929 - 2017) Sadly, I inform you that Ossie Emery ACS passed away on Sunday Morning, 18th June 2017. A humanitarian, film-maker and photographer for over 65 years he documented the richness and complexity of human life across a huge range of cultures. He leaves behind a large legacy of work having filmed on 143 international assignments filming on every continent of the world. In April Ossie held an exhibition From the Edge photographic exhibition, held in Exeter a small town in the NSW Southern Highlands, which documented a small glimps of some of those 143 trips to some of the worlds most remote places, a testament to his extraordinary eye and his capacity to capture the right moment. A collection of over 300 very powerful black and white prints, just a few of the many he'd taken over the years while filming those documentaries.
For those lucky enough to know Ossie you would have heard a yarn or three that is for certain. We speak with great fondness about Ossie's legacy, part of which is a "Family" of filmmakers... follow the link below to view his enormous body of work and for a small glimpse of his lifelong journey. But in many ways it's all about family, and Ossie and Cynthia were blessed with four children Bruce, Sue, Ross and Liz. There were nine grandchildren Rowen, Glynn-Jakeb, Taren, Jonathon, Sionen, Olivia, Ethan, Aiden and Saskia. Ossie will be sorely missed by so very many, so why not come along to a special Memorial Celebration of Ossie's Amazing life. Memorial Celebration Commencing 3.00pm Monday, 26 June, 2017 Exeter Memorial Hall, Exeter Road, Exeter Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Celebration of Ossies life.
The month of July is almost here, and with it the opportunity for eligible ACS members to apply for Accreditation and the right to use the letters ACS after their name. But before you do, heres a few things to consider: 1. I am a current financial member of the Australian Cinematographers Society. Members with fees in arrears may not apply. 2. I have been a Cinematographer member (Formerly Full member) of the ACS for the past three years and have been working full time as a cinematographer for a minimum of 8 years. 3. I will contact my State Branch President in sufficient time to obtain relevant paperwork and assessment of the suitability of my submission prior to the material being sent to the National ACS Accreditation Panel by the deadline. 4. I will be able to submit all material within the specified dates for submission, currently being July 1st to July 31st and understand material will NOT be accepted after this date. 5. I consider my material is of high quality and will meet the requirements. 6. I will include all required documentation and signed forms with my submission. 7. I will include payment with my submission. 8. I am aware that should I receive my letters, the Society will be calling on me and will expect my involvement in things like Awards judging, Accreditation assessments, maybe being on my Branch committee or being involved Nationally on the Executive or on a sub committee. I understand that gaining my ACS letters is indeed a privilege and the highest honour the Society can bestow on me but in turn I know the Society expects and indeed needs my involvement.
Its also my great pleasure to welcome back FUJINON - FUJIFILM as our Major National sponsor for the 10th year, along with our other generous National Sponsors and also welcome new sponsors RED DIGITAL CINEMA, CAMERAHIRE along with GEAR HEAD and CWSONDEROPTIC who have signed on as a Gold sponsor this year. Without the incredible support and collaborative spirit of our sponsors the Society would not have had the significant growth it has. My thanks to you all! Normally at this time we would be gearing to participate at SMPTE, but this year will be a little different. We will have our customary booth at SMPTE thanks to the generosity of SMPTE and Expertise Events, but we will not be presenting any specific SMPTE SESSIONS as in previous years, but will be working in tandem with our ACS sponsors, particularly VIDEOCRAFT who will be featuring a special interview session with John Seale AM ACS ASC being moderated by AC Magazine editor, James Cunningham. July will see work commence on the re development stage Phase 1# of our ACS web site to enable us to expand and bring a more interactive facility to all members. Our ACS web development committee comprising Mark Morris, Heidi Tobin, Hemma Kearney, James Cunningham and Lizz Vernon are to be congratulated for their diligence and painstaking work. Once this first phase is completed in readiness to accept Awards entries online this year we will move onto the much larger Phase 2# which will be completed by March 2018, and will expand the potential capacity and performance of our ACS website enormously. 2017 AWARDS ENTRIES - A reminder to assist you in planning your Awards entries this year. ALL BRANCH AWARDS ENTRIES WILL NOW OPEN ON 1ST AUGUST & CLOSE 18TH AUGUST
. NO LATE ENTRIES ALLOWED. This is a small window so I recommend you start thinking about your Awards entry material now. VISIT TO BRISBANE - On June 21st I returned to my old stamping grounds in Brisbane for the Queensland Branch AGM. The significance of this particular meeting was the realisation for all those in attendance that Branch President, Tony OLoughlan (TonyO) would not be standing for re-election as President.
TonyO has given of himself tirelessly to the Branch for as long as I can remember, dating back to when I was Branch President all those years ago. His devotion and commitment knew no bounds and it is with a degree of sadness that he has decided to take this necessary step. Like many, Tony has in many ways set aside his own career growth to guide the Queensland Branch when it was needed most. I thank him on behalf on us all and wish him ongoing success as a Cinematographer. Good on you TonyO!!
