CW Sonderoptic - Leica Lenses - THE BIGGER PICTURE

At this event you'll find out how lens designers are responding to cinematographers' pursuit of the big 65 mm picture look.

Learn how right at the centre of this new look comes Leica with a new type of lens that aims to put paid to the ironic practice of sticking old lenses on brand new cameras in search of an organic human look.

Experts from Leica in Germany will show us footage that illustrates how and why they designed the new Thalia lenses with a circular bokeh and images that are not too sharp and not too flat.

Our knowledgeable friends Rainer Hercher and Osamu Tsukada from Leica lens maker, ACS National sponsor CW Sonderoptic will answer any lens questions you have.

RSVP to Ron Johanson ACS president@austcine.org.au and don't miss this great event hosted by CW Sonderoptic and the ACS at the ACS National HQ. Drinks and nibbles provided from 6:30 pm.

VALE - Please take a moment to celebrate the lives and legacy of both Alan Lake and Micheal Ballhaus ASC BVK

Vale - Alan Lake (18th November 1934 - 15th April 2017)

Alan was born in 1934 in Sydney, New South Wales. He was an editor and production manager, known for BMX Bandits (1983), Turkey Shoot (1982) and Dead End Drive-In (1986). Alan was in charge of the Editing at Supreme and ran it with strict control like a battle ship commander. He worked with some of the guys from the Shell film unit like Max Lemon and Tim Wellburn. Alan had started Film Production Services (FPS) and was making heaps of great Australian films. In the later years after closing FPS he edited films for Filmwest in Singapore and Australia. Allan was a great supporter of the Australian film industry.

Vale Micheal Ballhaus ASC BVK

Vale Micheal Ballhaus ASC BVK (5 August 1935 – 11 April 2017)

The ACS are very sad to learn that legendary cinematographer Vale Micheal Ballhaus ASC BVK has passed away. Michael was born in Berlin, Germany, where he was influenced by family friend Max Ophüls. He came to prominence with his work on sixteen films for Rainer Werner Fassbinder beginning with Whity (1971).

Later settling in the United States, he worked on many American films, for directors John Sayles; Marisa Silver; Francis Ford Coppola, and Barry Levinson. Ballhaus was nominated three times for the Academy Award for Best Cinematography, for Broadcast News (1987), The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989), and Gangs of New York (2002), but never won. However, he did win the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Cinematography for Goodfellas. His unforgettable tracking shot from GOODFELLAS still leaves us breathless today.

Watch now and witness his artistry again via the full VALE link below

John Stokes ACS on location in India

Big thanks to these blokes for an amazing effort working with both 16mm and 35mm.

No hairs, scratches, and focus was on the money, and the gear was impeccable. Hard to believe none of us had worked with film for quite some time.

Thanks Monic, Manish, Milan and co. Job extremely well done.
