Greetings members, sponsors and friends,

What a whirlwind month May has been!!
National Awards, Expo and special presentations in Adelaide,
Anamorphic Masterclass with the legendary Peter James ACS ASC, St Kilda Film Festival participation in Melbourne by the Victorian Branch
Lemac NAB Reviews in a number of Branches, with a large turn out at the HQ Drop In.
And well done to the Western Australian Branch for reigniting their Branch eNews.

To cap off May an initial meeting to determine issues relating to new technologies and the future role of the cinematographer, initiated by Peter James ACS ASC and Calvin Gardiner ACS at the HQ. This particular subject is one that will be discussed at the ASC Summit in Los Angeles on 6 - 9 June where David Burr ACS and I will be attending in order to present the thoughts of the ACS relating to many topics on a very full Agenda, that includes:

  • Opportunities to bond and discuss issues common to us all
  • The current status of the Cinematographer in our respective countries
  • Control of the image
  • Virtual production and the role of the Cinematographer in new technologies
  • Film and Digital archival and preservation
  • Cinematographers as teachers
  • Film is not dead!

There will be much to discuss, including the presenting by the ACS of The role of the Cinematographer in the new Age - "A FORUM OF EXPECTATIONS". We will present findings from the discussions initiated by Peter James ACS ASC and Calvin Gardiner ACS as we feel that certain aspects of the Cinematographers position is gradually slipping away, given new technologies. It is imperative that we as Cinematographers remain major contributors to the creative process.
With an anticipated 40 plus countries involved it promises to be an outstanding exchange of views. Upon returning from the Summit, I will make a full report for all members.

ACS NATIONAL & BRANCH SPONSOR SUPPORT

June 30 sees the completion of another ACS National & Branch Sponsor year.

I cannot voice enough appreciation to all our sponsors for their support and loyalty to our ACS members and the Society as a whole, and I look forward to welcoming them back as sponsors for 2016 - 17.

Having said that, I can advise that Marc van Agten and the team at Fujinon - Fujifilm have again come on board as our Major National Sponsor for the eighth consecutive year. Other sponsors who will be continuing their generous support at the time of writing are: Panavision, Videocraft, Lemac, ARRI Australia, Silvertrack Digital, Showreelfinder, Panasonic, AMMPT, & Well Above. We are extremely fortunate to have a dedicated group of sponsors who have a mutual love of our industry and those who work within it.

It’s important that we respond positively to our Sponsors by supporting them and their brands at every opportunity.

Again, my thanks to all our ACS sponsors, for your valuable support.

Ron Johanson OAM ACS

ACCREDITATION APPLICATIONS OPEN JULY 1

If you are considering applying for ASC Accreditation this year, then contact your Branch President or the National President president@austcine.org.au regarding your submission and an Application form.

Applications will only be accepted from July 1 until July 31, but by all means make contact so your submission can be viewed and appraised before you officially submit.

"ACS Accreditation is the highest honour that can be bestowed on an ACS member.

Any cinematographer who has been a FULL ACS member for a minimum of three years can apply or may be encouraged to apply for Accreditation.
The Accreditation process begins at the Branch level where the work to be submitted is, where possible, screened to confirm all material has been shot by the applicant and general assistance and advice relating to the submission may be offered.

The President of the Branch can discuss the submission with the applicant. It may be suggested the submission should be strengthened, changed or maybe even suggest to wait for another year or so before submitting. Once deemed suitable, the submission is sent by the applicant’s Branch to our National Headquarters for that round of Accreditation assessments”.

Look forward to hearing from you.

FUJINON FUJIFILM ENTERS NINTH YEAR AS AUSTRALIAN CINEMATOGRAPHERS SOCIETY MAJOR NATIONAL SPONSOR

The company has had a long and successful relationship with the ACS that includes initiatives such as the Fujifilm motion picture film contributions which helped in the establishment of the ACS National HQ in North Sydney, being a major participant in all State and National awards ceremonies and providing support when top international DoPs such as Anthony Dod Mantle ASC BSC DFF visit the Society.

ACS National President Ron Johanson OAM ACS said, “Clearly everyone at the ACS is delighted that Fujinon Fujifilm have again decided to be our Major National sponsor for the ninth year. The relationship between the ACS and Fujinon Fujifilm is one built on mutual respect and without the support and the collaborative spirit from not only Fujinon Fujifilm but all our ACS sponsors, the Society would not have made the impact it has, both nationally and internationally. Our ACS National Awards, along with our ACS National Headquarters are testament to the positive relationship forged with Marc van Agten and the team."

Marc Van Agten commented, “It’s been a long and very successful partnership for Fujinon Fujifilm and the ACS as both organisations complement each other well. The ACS serves its members and the entire industry very well and I’m delighted to say that as a result an increasing number of its members use Fujinon lenses to create their magic on the screen. On behalf of everyone at Fujinon Fujifilm I would like to thank Ron and all the ACS State and National committees and members for their continued support and we look forward to furthering our partnership in the years ahead.”

The Society welcomes our latest ACS National Gold sponsor Well Above, the marketing and PR agency owned and run by Salvatore Di Muccio, to the ACS family.

As many of you will know Salvatore has been a very keen supporter of the ACS for many years (in fact he has, by his request, copy 250/250 of Shadowcatchers!) and Well Above has been providing marketing and PR for many of our National sponsors including ARRI, Fujifilm, Fujinon, Silver Trak, Sony and Videocraft during that time.

For those of you who don’t know Salvatore or his company, Well Above is a full service agency that specialises in strategy, marketing, motivation and PR and promotion in the film, TV, production, broadcast and technology industries. That’s why you’ll always see Salvatore at all ACS functions as well as trade shows including NAB, IBC, SMPTE, Broadcast Asia and ABE. You’ll also regularly see the stories he writes and places for his clients in industry trade magazines such as our own AC magazine, IF and Content + Technology.

What I can also tell you is that Well Above has been helping people and companies with their marketing and PR in the film, TV, broadcast and production industries for over 25 years, so they are very good at identifying and achieving goals.

In Salvatore’s words, "Our difference is our people and our approach. Our people are unique. Our approach is too. I’m sure you have heard that before. What you will not have heard before is that, at Well Above we follow a holistic and humanistic philosophy in all the areas of our business. This means we work with our clients, in partnership, to give them deeper, better more satisfying results. As a result they are generally much happier too. What we also do that no other agency does is offer Motivation and Confidence+ services to our clients. There are many marketing and PR agencies out there but we like to think it is what we offer in these two areas, which makes Well Above truly like no other. Oh and we also absolutely love film, TV and the technology, talent and magic that makes them happen!"

So if you or your company would like any help with marketing or PR please contact Salvatore on +61 412 64 99 64 or at salvatore@wellabove.com or you can get more information about Well Above at

ACS MOVES INTO SILVER TRAK’S MEDIA ROOM

The Australian Cinematographers Society now has access to customised Media Rooms for each of our state branches and a National ACS Media Room through Platinum Sponsor Silver Trak.

“This is a wonderful and very natural step for the ACS as the possibilities and opportunities when using Media Room are endless. As Media Room is so instantly accessible we will be using it for a wide range of things including sharing content between committee members such as awards submissions that were previously handed around on hard drives, archiving precious ACS footage and viewing pre-screeners. All at the simple touch of a button.”

In addition to archiving, the safe and secure sharing of content nationwide is a service that Media Room immediately brings to the ACS and its members.

~ ACS National President Ron Johanson OAM ACS

ARTS Party

It's common knowledge that when it comes to politics the ACS is strictly apolitical, but at the most recent Austalian Screen Industry Guilds meeting held at the ACS HQ, a representative of the recently formed Arts Party, Mr PJ Collins addressed the meeting to explain how the Arts Party was founded, it’s crowd funding, it’s candidates and it’s platforms for election. So, for your interest, here's the link to their policy paper, http://www.artsparty.org/screenindustry

Director Lifts The Lid On Dealing With Hollywood Studios, Stars And Casting Cate Blanchett

Bruce Beresford and Sue Milliken during filming of ‘Paradise Road’ (Photo Jasin Boland)

Article by Don Groves for FORBES Media & Entertainment

Producers and directors who think it’s tough negotiating with Hollywood studios on budgets, scripts and casting decisions nowadays may not realize it was arguably just as difficult 20 years ago.

There’s a Fax from Bruce, a new book by Australian director Bruce Beresford and his long-time producer Sue Milliken, lifts the lid on the machinations with Fox Searchlight, talent, agents, financiers and others involved in the WW2-set drama Paradise Road. The book presents a refrain of budget over-runs and disagreements over casting and rejections from some famous names, laced with Beresford’s candid and often unflattering observations on certain actors and directors.

ASIG calls on all political parties to support Australian content on new digital platforms

The people who make Australia’s favourite film and TV shows have called on all political parties to support the introduction of quotas on the new digital platforms now broadcasting in Australia. These include Netflix, Presto and Stan.

The industry wants to ensure that Australians continue to see themselves reflected in screen content across all platforms into the future. That means confronting head-on the challenges of changing technology, copyright law and open world markets. In the last week the European Union has proposed the introduction of a 20% quota of European content on all video on demand services such as Netflix. ASIG supports this approach and urges all Australian governments to adopt a similar policy that has succeeded in supporting a vibrant Australian culture across our television screens.

The extension of Australian content minimums to new platforms, such as online streaming services like Netflix will ensure we continue to see Australian stories on our screens and will provide a level playing field for our current broadcasters.

The ASIG consists of: Australian Directors Guild (ADG), Australian Guild of Screen Composers (AGSC), Australia Screen Editors (ASE), Australian Writers Guild (AWG), Australian Cinematographers Society (ACS), Australian Production Designers Guild (APDG), Australian Screen Sound Guild (ASSG), Equity, Media Entertainment & Arts Alliance (MEAA), Screen Producers Australia (SPA), Women in Film and Television (WIFT) and the Visual Effects Society (VES).

Kingston Anderson, CEO of the Australian Directors Guild said “This move by the European Union makes sense as it provides equity across platforms and ensures local content is made for this new broadcast sector.”

Zoe Angus, Director, Actors Equity said “Australia has some of the most outstanding screen talent in the world, both behind the camera and in front of it. We must ensure that new platforms continue to provide opportunities to tell unique, home-grown stories and showcase this talent to new audiences”.

Matthew Deaner, CEO of SPA commented “These are big, disruptive, successful businesses that have had time to expand in the Australian market without making any significant investment in local production. It’s time they step up to the plate and contribute to new Australian film and television production.”

This is in line with ASIG Screen Policy which has urged all parties contesting the next election to adopt to ensure Australian content on all our screens.
