2016 ACS NATIONAL AWARDS REVIEW Lindsay Coleman
At the end of the ACS National Award dinner, April 30, 2016, the guest of honour, former IMAGO president Nigel Walters BSC, turned to me and said That is one of the best award ceremonies Ive ever been to! You could tell, looking at the moved expression on his face, that he meant it.

It was indeed a special Awards ceremony, moving, raucous, optimistic, and droll. Kicking off before dinner, Master of Ceremonies Ray Martin AM made a few topical comments about the 60 Minutes controversy, and Tara Brown, presenting the kind of collegial concern and empathy which so characterized the rest of the presentation.

Then came the first highlight of the evening. A bright spot in any of the recent awards, adorable CineKids winner Catriona Warren from Victoria announced her official desire to one day become a professional cinematographer, a heartening announcement when taking in account one of the evenings key themes: the empowerment and recognition of female cinematographers by the ACS.

In a moving presentation recognizing her ongoing personal and professional support of her company Lemac, for the ACS and its cinematographers Sue Greenshields received a special award from SA President Ernie Clark ACS, and later Panavision CEO, Paul Jackson was presented with a similar award in recognition of the support from the Samuelsons/Panavision group. in a surprise presentation National President Ron Johanson ACS himself received an award in recognition for his efforts, to aid in the greater visibility and recognition of female cinematographers in the Australian media industry.
Rons speech, in which our captain was overwhelmed with emotion, was characteristic of many of those delivered during the evening. Heartfelt and inspiring, Rons words were matched by the words of Nigel Walters in his sincere praise of the ACS and his voicing of the hope of achieving a truly global cinematography institution in IMAGOs future, a future which the ACS will have an increasing say in given its placement as an Imago member.

Louis Irving ACS, upon induction into the ACS Hall of Fame, proceeded with a wry anecdote on his ascension to an imaginary hall of the ACS greats, where he sheepishly admit that his prolific work on television was the sole qualification for his entry. Fellow inductee Ellery Ryan ACS meanwhile evoked Joseph Conrad in his description of the unique camaraderie enjoyed by cinematographers, akin to ships captains bumping into one another in port between sojourns. Truly droll, Bob Miller Technical & Innovation Achievement Award recipient Lester Bishop gave one of the most self-aware speeches of the evening, noting his amazement at his wifes patience at his tinkering over the years.

Emma Paine and Sky Davies picked up Gold Tripods, respectively, for the Web Content and Short Film categories. Both expressed not only their joy in receiving their awards, but noted the particular pleasure they experienced working in exciting new genres on unconventional stories. A recurring figure of the evening, NSW member Ross Giardina ACS, went up to the stage for awards in Web Content and two more in Advertising categories. Awarded, unable to attend but responding via link were Danny Ruhlmann ACS for Music Videos, Aaron Hollett for his striking work on Gaza Airstrike in the category of Neil Davis International News, Scott Kimber for his fine work in the Corporate & Educational category and Leigh Hubner ACS in the Current affairs category.

A memorable speech from a memorable recipient in the Syd Wood ACS Local/National News came from Queenslands Peter Steer, whose remarkable footage of being menaced himself by a gunman was chilling for the events audience. Luckily, Peter survived and could share with us more of his experience of that day, augmenting already strong footage. Another repeat visitor to the stage was Geoffrey Hall ACS for his work in Television Drama and on Short Films.
The evening climaxed with a series of major awards. Former President, Ted Rayment ACS and John Seale AM ACS ASC were both deeply honoured in receiving the Ron Windon ACS Contribution Award, achieving that unique Aussie blend of pride and humility.

Then came the final one-two punch of the evening, with John Seale receiving the Gold tripod for Features, and the Cinematographer of the Year Award, the Milli. Spontaneously, and collectively the crowd rose to its feet in a celebration not only of Johns work, but also the communal ideals of mateship, aesthetic diligence, and professionalism. John in turn, invited his dear friend and long-term collaborator on stage, David Burr ACS, to share in this special moment. It was the perfect end to a memorable year.

SHE SHOOTS
Putting women in camera & sound technician roles
AFTRS, Screen NSW, Women NSW, and Executive Womens Television Group, a group of NSW-based senior women from production companies and broadcasters, have come together She Shoots, an exciting program to help address the overwhelming gender disparity in commercial unscripted television camera and sound departments.
She Shoots will be multi-faceted program:
· AFTRS will facilitate a free short course (2 weeks in June) to train female screen industry practitioners in sound and camera skills; · In addition to practical instruction and classroom teaching, set visits to reality TV productions will give participants exposure to the inner working of this genre; · Industry partners including Matchbox Pictures and Foxtel will then facilitate 4 - 6 week paid attachments in camera and sound roles for the participants on leading Australian commercial reality programs with VA Digital Hire sponsoring equipment hire.
As part of the course, Women NSW will offer support to graduates, through its partnership with the support network SALT Supporting and Linking Tradeswomen.
The course commences Monday June 20, and is open to NSW-based women only. Women living in Regional NSW and Greater Western Sydney are encouraged to apply.
This initiative will take 6-8 applicants, and applications close on 13 May 2016.

ACS raises funds for the MPIBS
The raffle held in conjunction with the ACE 45th National Awards for Cinematography raised $1385.00 for the MPIBS well done raffle sellers!

ACCREDITATION APPLICATIONS OPEN JULY 1
If you are considering applying for ASC Accreditation this year, then please talk to your Branch President or the National President regarding your submission and an Application form. Applications will only be accepted from July 1 until July 31
"ACS Accreditation is the highest honour that can be bestowed on an ACS member. Any cinematographer who has been a FULL ACS member for a minimum of three years can apply or may be encouraged to apply for Accreditation.
The Accreditation process begins at the Branch level where the work to be submitted is, where possible, screened to confirm all material has been shot by the applicant and general assistance and advice relating to the submission may be offered. The President of the Branch can discuss the submission with the applicant. It may be suggested the submission should be strengthened, changed or maybe even suggest to wait for another year or so before submitting. Once deemed suitable, the submission is sent by the applicants Branch to our National Headquarters for that round of Accreditation assessments. Look forward to hearing from you. Ron Johanson ACS

CW Sonderoptics held a very informative evening, hosted by Rainer Hercher, the General Sales Director at the ACS National HQ for NSW Branch members and interested parties on Tuesday, 4 May. Rainer then took to the Sydney skies with his Leica in hand & David Knight ACS at the controls before continuing his travels to speak to our VIC Branch members in Melbourne and over to the NZCS.
