From The President

Greetings ACS colleagues,

The 2015 ACS National Awards for Cinematography were named in honour of our dear friend and colleague Andrew Lesnie ACS ASC, as we needed to acknowledge the love and respect we all have for Andrew.

He gave us many personal cinema moments, moments that will live with us forever, and yet he has been taken from us way too early, and we are left with those memories.

I ask you to take a moment and remember Andrew and the legacy he has left us.

The Awards weekend was a resounding success, hosted and organised superbly by the Tasmanian Branch and thanks so much to Peter Curtis ACS, Mike Sampey, David & Ruth Hudspeth, Robert Heazlewood, Andrew Harcourt, Dick Marks OAM, Patricia Bromley-Marks, Graham Gates, Tom Waugh, Peter Donnelly & the calming influence of Leanne Curtis.

The volume of time put into any Awards presentation is enormous, and in many cases for that period of time, lives are put on hold in order to ensure the success of these presentations.

There were too many highlights to go into detail about, but some of the very special moments were David Brill’s emotional and heartfelt response to receiving his Accreditation, Martha Ansara’s surprise at being inducted into the HOF, The wisdom and sharing

knowledge by both Peter Weir AM and Russell Boyd, and Ray Martin's ever present warmth, enthusiasm and love of cinematography. Callan Green ACS and his words of tribute to Andrew Lesnie, the exuberance of our first CineKids recipient Maxim Hussey from the NT Branch, and the acceptance speech from our Milli winner the ever modest and gracious Garry Phillips ACS.

There was of course no surprise at the humility of Tasmanian President Peter Curtis and National Secretary David Wakeley ACS, upon receiving their Ron Windon ACS Contribution Awards. It was also pleasing to see the smiling face of Ron Windon present, and as I have said many times before, it is Ron who inspires us all to continue the work that he and many other started all those years ago.

Of course, there were many other events, under the SOUTHERN LIGHT banner including: A very special invitation from the Tasmanian Governor, Her Excellency, Professor Kate Warner AM, for us to attend a reception at Government House in recognition of the importance of our industry to the State. This was attended by around 160 members and guests.

A fantastic Screen Tasmania sponsored Screening of Peter Weir's truly iconic film GALLIPOLI, and Q&A with our Guests of Honour, Peter Weir AM, Russell Boyd ACS ASC. Joined by John Seale AM ACS ASC and David Burr ACS, the Gallipoli camera crew were re-united, in front of a capacity audience.

Our first ACS EXPO was attended by nearly 300, a Pieter de Vries ACS workshop and a Ray Martin AM Retrospective, both had the Full House sign up.

To all the sponsors who participated in the Expo, and the Special Technical Presentations, thank you for being a part of the events, and for being so willing and so positive about exhibiting at the Southern Light Expo. Without the confidence our sponsors have in the Society and our administration, an event like this would be out of our reach.

My personal thanks to all who attended, onto Adelaide next year for another fantastic National Awards.

Until next time...

Ron Johanson OAM ACS National ACS President
