AWARDS SPECIAL EVENT - The ACS Presents A CONVERSATION WITH JOHN JARRAT
As part of the 2014 ACS National Awards for Cinematography events, the Queensland Branch proudly presents A Conversation with John Jarratt. This promises to be a great night with our 2014 Awards Guest of Honour, actor and now also Director, John Jarratt taking us through footage from his recent Directing debut on the thriller feature film, StalkHer. You would remember John from his many appearances in a huge list of features over the years including "The Great MacArthy", "Picnic at Hanging Rock", "Summer City", "Blue Fin", "The Chant of Jimmy Blacksmith", "The Odd Angry Shot" and "We of the Never Never", to name but a few. More recently youd know John in the role of sinister Mick Taylor in the "Wolf Creek" films or from his roles in "Django Unchained" or "Australia". Of course, you may also remember John from the multitude of appearances in numerous TV Series and he was also Co-Host on Better Homes & Gardens, with his ex-wife Noni Hazlehurst, for quite a few years. This series was actually shot in their own home! John will discuss how he approached the film StalkHer, not only as the Director but as lead actor, whilst he was tied to a chair for 90% of the film. No mean feat! Long time collaborator Ernie Clark ACS will moderate the session, so dont miss this opportunity. When: Friday May 23rd @ 7:00pm. CINEMATOGRAPHY COURSES @ AFTRS OPEN
Directing the Moving Camera Masterclass with Gil Bettman Director, author and professor Gil Bettman of the Dodge College of Film and Media Arts at Chapman University in California, brings his Masterclass to AFTRS Open for the first time. This seminar redefines the overarching principles of how to use images to tell a story.
Students are taught how to apply those principals to the unique requirements of each scene in a film in order to devise a moving shot which strikes the perfect balance between motion and drama -- and best advances the story through that scene.
Over two days of theory and practical demonstrations (with actors) in the AFTRS professional film studio, you will learn, prepare, choreograph, shoot and critique a dialogue scene, putting Gil's teachings into practice in director/cinematographer teams of two. This class will be limited to 14 students so get in quick! DATES: July 12 13

Postcard from Rob Hill in Washington

Former Darwin boy and now an SA Branch member, ABC cinematographer, Rob Hill ACS met US President Barack Obama last week, as part of celebrations for his White House Press Photographer's Award. Rob won for the Foreign Correspondent report by Lisa Millar, Inside the NRA. Rob, who is based in Washington, received a handshake and congratulations from the President. Before Robs Washington posting he was based in Beijing with Stephen McDonell.
Gordon Willis, ASC ( 1931-2014 )
On May 18 legendary Cinematographer, "Prince of Darkness" Gordon Willis, ASC passed away after complications due to cancer. He was 82, surrounded by loved ones at his Cape Cod home. Gordon defined an era with his boundary pushing work on such films as "The Godfather" Trilogy, "Manhattan", "Annie Hall" and "Bright Lights, Big City". Grodon speaks about his work on The Godfather Caleb Deschanel, ASC pays tribute to Willis Jon Fauer remembers Willis A true legend lost but absolutely not forgotten.
