From The President

Greetings ACS colleagues,

September, believe it or not is here!!
And of course along with all Spring traditions - namely the AFL & NRL Grand Finals – comes our own ACS Grand Final traditions - the final call for State & Territory Award entries, ACS Accreditation, our National ACS AGM, and the ever expanding list of new and continuing National sponsors.

It is the loyalty and enthusiasm of this final group that urge me ask you yet again to please keep these companies to the forefront of your mind when searching for products and services. It’s easy to get caught up in the advertising hype of getting the best or cheapest deal - however cheapest is not necessarily the best when it means that the profits and the jobs go offshore. Please think twice before signing that purchase order – and give your support to the companies who support us and our Industry, our loyal ACS National and State Sponsors. It’s important to remember that by simply honouring the loyalty of Australian companies who support our industry through their sponsorship, we are helping to keep the profits and the jobs in Australia.

ACS National Gold sponsor AFTRS, as part of their generous support of the Society offer an ACS member a place in the Camera Assistant’s Intensive course, which takes place at the end of September in Sydney. The recipient this year is NT member, Tim Wood who will make the journey from the Territory to take up the opportunity. Well done Tim, we look forward to hearing about the experience in the coming weeks, and thanks again to the AFTRS and the NT Branch.

It was great to receive news from Lawrence Horsburgh at Kodak advising that Werner Winkelmann will re - open NegLab in Sydney. We don't have a opening date just yet, but Werner has said Neglab should be up running late October 2013, and processing services will include ECN 35mm & 16mm.

SPRING IS DEFINITELY IN THE AIR!
Ron Johanson ACS - National President

Thanks to everyone who sent something in, it is a great source of interest and material for us all. If you haven’t already, please contact Ron Johanson – president@austcine.org.au to arrange delivery or pick up of your prizes, and many thanks once again to all those who entered.

2013 ACS AWARDS ENTRIES WELL & TRULY OPEN

The host States have announced their Award Entry opening dates for the 2013 ACS Awards for Cinematography. There have been changes to the categories, and in particular, after consultation with the Branches we have introduced one new category:

CAT 10: Web & New Media

Narrative web content, fictional, documentary or promotional material created for online release. Includes webisodes, short documentaries & commercial content released on the web. Check out the AWARDS categories via the link:

Award Categories »

There are also changes to entry formats and the terms and conditions, so please read them carefully before entering. Note there are no tape formats accepted this year. Follow the link to Awards Terms and Conditions

Thanks to NSW member Aleksei Vanamois, a new on line entry form has been designed. We believe it is easier to fill in and it will only generate an entry number once the form is totally completed. Once completed you will receive a confirmation email with your unique entry number. You have to label both your physical media and the container and follow the naming convention of all files by including your entry #. e.g.

Cat#_yourname_projectname_entrynumber.filetype
eg: Cat12_johncitizen_birdsofsuva_89.mov

As you can appreciate keeping track of over 800 entries is no easy task, so if you are entering thumb drives we need some sort of label to be able to identify it without having to plug it into a computer. One simple way to do this is to put each thumb drive into a sealed envelope with the category, your name, the title and your unique entry # clearly written on it.

ACS AWARD ENTRY DATES:

SA & WA NOW OPEN - Closing 6 September
Link: SA & WA Awards Entry Form

NSW & ACT ENTRIES CLOSED 30 August
Link: NSW & ACT Awards Entry Form

QLD & NT NOW OPEN - Closing 20 September
Link: QLD & NT Awards Entry Form

VIC & TAS NOW OPEN - Closing 4 October
Link: VIC & TAS Awards Entry Form

So now is the time to get your best work together and enter, because the only way your work can be judged at the National Awards is to have won Gold at the State & Territory Awards. Good luck!

A Postcard from the team @ Airview Xtreme

The last two months have seen Airview Xtreme's Nathan Tomlinson literally all over the country. Working almost exclusively on the BBC's, television series 'COAST' which has been filming in Australia this year for Foxtel's History channel, with its well-known Scottish presenter, Neil Oliver. True to form, the much loved format features impressive aerial coverage of coastal regions of Australia that reflect the great diversity of history, culture and landscape across this continent, and through its stories explores how the coast has shaped the people, and how people have, in turn, been shaped by the coast. This format greatly suits Airview Xtreme's award winning aerial Cinematographer, Nathan Tomlinson, whose recent work includes the ABC's "GREAT SOUTHERN LAND" and the TV series 'KEEPING UP WITH THE JONES’ES". “COAST AUSTRALIA” launches December 2nd on the History channel

I AM A GIRL - Cinematographer: Nicola Daley

I Am A Girl: Powerful new film reveals journey of girls from around the world

Stories of strength, hope, courage and a refusal to be second best
The unique challenges faced by girls across the world – and the bravery and the honesty with which they overcome them - are laid bare in a powerful new feature-length Australian documentary released this month.

I Am A Girl tells the moving stories of six girls aged from 16 to 19 in six different countries. The girls tell their own stories in their own words, and the result is a documentary that everyone should see. Directed and produced by award-winning filmmaker Rebecca Barry, the film follows Manu, Kimsey, Aziza, Habiba, Breani and Katie – each coming of age and ready to become something extraordinary.

Click here to see the trailer for I Am A Girl: www.iamagirl.com.au

The film has been funded through philanthropic grants via the Documentary Australia Foundation, a unique non-profit organisation established to support Australian cultural and social impact documentaries. I Am A Girl’s partners include Plan International, Intrepid Travel, Thyne Reid Foundation, Women’s Plans Foundation, WeirAnderson Foundation, and many private donors, with in-kind support from Deluxe Australia and Girlosophy and the producer equity payment from Screen Australia.

From Cambodia to Cameroon, Afghanistan to Australia, as the girls come of age in the way their cultures dictate we see remarkable and moving stories of resilience, bravery and humour.

“The cold hard reality is that if you are born a girl in this world today, in every measurable way you will be at a disadvantage. Yet in spite of these obstacles, girls have found extraordinary ways to persevere,” Barry says.
Barry was inspired to make the film after surviving a tsunami in Samoa. “With my brush with death came a realisation that perhaps for the first time, I did not have control, in those moments, over my life and its outcomes. I came to understand that for many girls in the world this is a feeling they live with every day.”

I Am a Girl opens on August 28 at the Chauvel Cinema in Sydney and on September 5 at Cinema Nova in Melbourne. Tickets can be bought at the cinemas or at www.iamagirl.com.au/tickets

FILM REVIEW – “These Final Hours” - by James Cunningham - Cinematographer: Bonnie Elliott

Interesting, that the end of the world has inspired such a long and lucrative succession of films, and a new Australian film THESE FINAL HOURS is a welcome inclusion.

The ‘apocalypse movie’ has a tried and tested history with films like Felix Feist’s simply excellent Deluge (1933), HG Wells’ forward-thinking The War of the Worlds (1953), or even Stanley Kubrick’s darkly humorous Dr Strangelove (1964). A culturally significant subgenre in film, they can be big movies, as evidenced by Roland Emerich’s The Day After Tomorrow (2004), or smaller less-obtrusive movies like Lars von Trier’s Melancholia (2011). The iconically West-Australian, THESE FINAL HOURS from Director Zak Hilditch and DOP Bonnie Elliot, may open as a fast-paced blow out but it soon becomes the latter, focusing on human drama.

Nathan Phillips (Wolf Creek, Balibo) breathes life into our lead anti-hero, James, and relishes the experience. He is clearly enjoying himself here as he effortlessly layers self-interest and egotism with engrained morals and a sense of anguish. There is no ‘saving the world’ for James, this is the end, and the film along with Philips makes us contemplate what exactly “what would we do?”.

A meteorite has hit earth and although Perth is one of the last places on earth to be left standing; certain annihilation looms. Using the Perth locations brilliantly, Elliott’s cinematography is astute as it shifts from daylight yellow to an unsettling orange as the end of the world draws near - and Perth provides an excellent backdrop for the story, as its inherent isolation will resonate well with Australian audiences.

An impressive feature debut for Hilditch, it certainly has the right ingredients to make a hit – and one hopes that THESE FINAL HOURS may just strike a chord with audiences. Go see it!!! 3/5 stars.

FUJINON 85-300MM CABRIO LENS WINS CINE GEAR EXPO 2013 AWARD

FUJIFILM’s Optical Devices Division has received a 2013 LA Cine Gear Expo Technical Award for its PL 85-300mm (model ZK3.5x85) Cabrio lens. Selected at the show by a panel of industry experts, the lens was recognised as the best new product in the camera technology category.

Fujinon’s range of Cabrio lenses have been a particular success in Australia where they are increasingly being used on current affairs programmes, TVCs and high profile TV series including Network TEN’s new drama, Wonderland. Such is the popularity of the Cabrio due to its quality of image and flexibility of use that the latest wide angle addition to the range will be released shortly at September’s IBC exhibition in Amsterdam.

Introduced late last year, the high-performance FUJINON PL 85-300 zoom lens was designed using the latest optical simulation technology, offering exceptional optical performance in both the centre of the image and in the corners of the frame. The PL 85-300’s longer lens makes it ideal for professional cinematographers and videographers. The PL 85-300 offers a focal length of 85-220mm at T2.9 and 300mm at T4.0, with 200-degree focus rotation.

“It’s an honour for the PL 85-300 Cabrio to be recognized by Cine Gear Expo as the best in new camera technology,” said FUJIFILM Australia General Manager Optical Devices Marc Van Agten. “We pride ourselves on creating only the highest quality optics. Whether you are from a film or video background, the Premier PL Cabrio lenses offer uncompromising quality and an unprecedented level of flexibility to meet the unique demands of high-end productions.”

The lightweight, versatile FUJINON PL 85-300 lens features an exclusive detachable servo drive unit, and is equipped with flange focal distance adjustment, self-aligning servo drive, a macro function for extreme close-up focus, and coverage of a 31.5mm diagonal sensor. PL 85-300 can be controlled using cinema industry standard wireless controllers, as well as existing FUJINON wired and wireless units.

FOX STUDIOS AUSTRALIA CEO NANCY ROMANO MOVES ON TO NEW CHALLENGES

After 13 years with the company CEO Nancy Romano has decided to leave Fox Studios Australia at the end of 2013.

The studios enjoyed considerable success during Romano’s tenure attracting international blockbuster productions including Australia, Wolverine: X-Men Origins, The Great Gatsby and The Wolverine and major Australian TV hits including X-Factor, The Voice and Australia’s Got Talent.

Romano also successfully partnered with the NSW State Government to increase production attraction incentives and oversaw the major acquisition of lighting equipment from Panalux making Fox Studios the largest lighting supplier in Australia.

Hal H. Haenel from Fox Studios’ US Operations said, “Nancy’s service, loyalty and commitment has seen our company succeed, grow and develop and Nancy’s leadership is a major contribution to our successes and her loss will be felt across the business. It is a testament to Nancy that she leaves her mark both commercially and through friendship on all of us at Fox Studios.” Nancy Romano said, “After 13 amazing years with Fox Studios Australia, seven as CEO, it’s time for me to move on. It has been a difficult decision for me to make after being here for so long and having achieved so much with the studio and our amazing team however, I truly feel the time is right time for me to find fresh challenges. The ACS wishes Nancy all the best for the future.
