THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES: review by James Cunningham

Derek Cianfrane's The Place Beyond The Pines (2012) is one of the most intelligent pieces of filmmaking to come out of the United States in many years. A relative newcomer to international audiences, Cianfance started his career as a Cinematographer. So it is not surprising that the director chose Sean Bobbit BSC, probably best known for Steve McQueen's The Hunger (2008), as his DOP for this project. Both Cianfrance and Bobbit are both considered and mature in their many traditional choices. There is a reliance on both mid shots and close ups here which unnervingly brings you to the center of each scene. In one of the most deftly designed and subtly powerful shots in the film, our camera tracks high behind a young boy on a bike. Almost spiritual in the emotion it evokes, the tracking shot beautifully and cleverly conveys the idea of the boy being 'watched over' by a recently deceased relative as he rides down a quiet road.

Importantly, the almost mesmerising direction does not take away from what is king here, and that is performance. The brutish, yet vulnerable character of Luke (Ryan Gossling) is at it's heart a likeable bad-guy archetype. However Gossling brings a quiet sense apathy to the role which is welcomed from the supporting cast around him -i ncluding a wonderfully dark turn by Australia's Ben Mendelsohn. While Bradley Cooper is solid is his portrayal as the the most stunning performance comes not, however, from our two leads - but from Ray Liotta in an ancillary role. The character of Deluca (Ray Liotta) carries a lot of weight while occupining the screen. From the moment we see Deluca through a porch screen door, we immediately feel uneasy, and it's through an often silent stare that Liotta absolutely commands every scene he is in. While indicative of the high quality craft this film demonstrates - other actors take note, less is certainly more.

This film, about far more than just fathers and sons, is ambitious in scope as it tells the stories of a group of inherently intertwined characters, in an oddly non-traditional narrative. Almost perfectly linear, the story even jumps forward fifteen years at one point transporting the audience, welcomingly, to a most unexpected place. As a whole, The Place Beyond The Pines is glossy on the outside, gritty on the inside, simple genius, and an absolute pleasure to watch for lovers of good cinema.
