From the President
Greetings ACS members, friends and colleagues, Over recent weeks Ive had the great opportunity on behalf of us all to attend the ASC Awards in Los Angeles, and the IMAGO General Assembly in Brussels, where the final hurdle was jumped and cleared in readiness for the vote later in the year, to enable all of the Imago Associate member countries, of which we are one, to become Full members with voting rights. This is a remarkable achievement for all those Associate member countries who simply want to play a more active role in this truly European Federation of Cinematographers.
Film Foundation
When I was in Brussels recently for the IMAGO meeting, I was fortunate enough to be introduced to Danny Van Deventer who is with a dedicated, enthusiastic group called FILM FOUNDATION. They are advocates for the ongoing use of film worldwide. Take a minute to check out their website: www.filmfoundation.info I think you'll find it really interesting.... Who said film is dead??
ASC Presents Dean Semler ACS ASC with Lifetime Achievement Award
If you've never heard the sound of 1500 people standing and applauding at one time, then you should have been at the ASC Awards last Sunday in Los Angeles, where I was lucky enough to attend and witness all those people applauding our very own Dean Semler ACS ASC when he was presented with his ASC Lifetime Achievement Award. It was such a proud moment and I detected a tear in Dean's eye, although it was difficult to really tell, because I certainly had a tear in mine. To make it even sweeter, Oscar®-winner Angelina Jolie presented the ASC Lifetime Achievement Award to Dean, who as a reminder, earned an Oscar and an ASC Award for Kevin Costners DANCES WITH WOLVES (1991). In 2007, his work on Mel Gibsons APOCALYPTO earned him a second ASC Award nomination. Dean has nearly 70 feature credits include such memorable films as CITY SLICKERS, LAST ACTION HERO, WATERWORLD, THE BONE COLLECTOR, WE WERE SOLDIERS, THE ALAMO, SECRETARIAT, Angelina Jolies directorial debut IN THE LAND OF BLOOD AND HONEY and the upcoming MALEFICENT. Celebrating with Dean were his wife Annie, daughter Ingrid and her husband, along with many other Aussies including; Mandy Walker ACS ASC, Greig Fraser ACS, Peter Levy ACS ASC, Steve Mason ACS, Mark Gollnicht, Brad Shield ACS, Richard Merriman, David Knight ACS, Paul Jackson, Martin Cayzer and many others. At the end of a wonderful evening Dean caught the red eye back to New Orleans for an 8.00am call, and spent the day working off a tracking vehicle in the freezing rain! You gotta love it!!! Congratulations Dean. All of us at the ACS are so incredibly proud of you.

Sponsor Spotlight: Lemac
Lemac Hosts Dedo at the ACS HQ ACS National sponsor and industry stalwart Lemac played host to Dedo Weigert, DEDO Lighting inventor and industry luminary on Wednesday 27 Feb at the National HQ. Forty plus members and guests attended a very informative evening. Add Your Voice to the National Screen Industry Campaign for "Australian Screens, Australian Stories"
Last week the AWG, along with the ADG, MEAA and SPAA, launched our 'Australian Screens. Australian Stories.' campaign to protect the future of new Australian drama, documetary and children's programming on free-to-air TV. Read more and sign the petition here: http://www.communityrun.org/petitions/keeping-australian-stories-on-tv-is-vi tal-keeping-conroy-to-his-word-is-the-battle The Australian public will be duped by the Federal Government if Senator Conroy's proposed changes are passed by Parliament as planned in March. In stark contrast with Recommendation 18 of its own Convergence Review, the new requirement for each multi-channel to broadcast minimum hours of Australian content per year will not increase the amount of new Australian drama, documentary and children's stories broadcast on our free-to-air television stations. Those requirements can and will be met by airing news, sport, reality programs and endless repeats of aged sitcoms. Our full press release can be found here: http://www.awg.com.au/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=513:aussc reensausstories&catid=1:latest-news&Itemid=328 Please take a minute to spread the word to your contacts far and wide. Together we can keep the petition numbers rising and our message resonating!

ARRI Alexa Releases New XT Model
With the ALEXA XT cameras (Xtended Technology), ARRI is refreshing its ALEXA product line, incorporating new features inspired by feedback from professional users. The ALEXA XT, ALEXA XT M, ALEXA XT Plus and ALEXA XT Studio cameras will replace all previous models except for the original ALEXA. Owners of existing ALEXA cameras will be able to purchase individual upgrades that deliver most of the features of the XT configuration. Faster and more affordable ARRIRAW All ALEXA XT models come with the new XR Module, a side panel that was co-developed with Codex to replace the previous SxS Module. The result is a smaller, lighter, more affordable and cable-free camera package that records ARRIRAW, ALEXAs highest quality image output, inside the camera. Less weight and easier working with internal NDs The In-camera Filter Module IFM-1 allows ALEXA XT models to be rated at the base sensitivity of EI 800 without the need for external Neutral Density (ND) filters, even in bright sunlight. True anamorphic with a 4:3 sensor For the most effective use of anamorphic lenses, each ALEXA XT model is equipped with a 4:3 sensor, the same size and shape as a Super 35 mm film frame. More efficient VFX through ubiquitous lens metadata Lens metadata is invaluable for a speedy VFX post workflow, which is why all ALEXA XT models are equipped with an LDS lens mount. The ARRI Lens Data System (LDS) reads the position of all lens rings and writes them into metadata in every format ALEXA can record.

ACS HQ Report
- David Lewis, HQ Manager Ian Nicholson has resumed his very successful Introduction to Short Film Classes on Wednesday nights throughout this month. Piet De Vries has been a little quiet this month with his training classes as he cruises around Australias Northern shores. (Apparently there is some work involved!!!) Ron Johanson and the ACS hosted a meeting of associated guilds. KidzFlicks held the premiere of last years festival winner at the HQ for cast, crew and family. The film Killer on The Loose was made by a group of young students 12 years and younger. The ACS supplied mentorship for the young camera operators on this production and at the premiere, presented them both with Honorary Student memberships.
The NSW Drop In this month was hosted by ARRI Australia with support from Fujinon Lenses. Stefan and his team showcased the new Alexa cameras , the latest Fujinon lenses, and from Red Apple their Zeiss Master Macro lens. A very informative night for all the members who attended.
The Drop In was also attended by Phil Balsdon (NSW member) who recently suffered a massive stroke. Phil is making a slow but good recovery and was thrilled to make it to an ACS event.
WIFT: Women in Film and Television judged this years award entries in the theatre.
