From the President

Greetings ACS Members, friends and colleagues.

My thoughts, on behalf of us all go out to the victims of the bushfires, floods and cyclones that have ravaged our Australian landscape again this summer. They seem to be with us each and every year, but you just don’t ever seem to get used to them. To all those cinematographers working to cover the stories and bring them into our homes each day, I say thank you for all your hard work and your heartfelt images.

Member Congratulations

Warwick Thornton

Congratulations to ACS member Warwick Thornton on receiving the 2013 AACTA AWARD FOR BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY for Director, Wayne Blair’s successful feature film “The Sapphires”.

Congratulations also to Peter Levy ACS ASC for his ASC nomination in the Half-hour Episodic Series category for Showtime’s House of Lies (“Gods of Dangerous Financial Instruments”) The winners in all categories will be announced at the ASC Awards on February 10, where Dean Semler ACS ASC will be presented with his ASC Lifetime Achievement Award.

Thanks to The Movie Network Channels

Peter Levy ACS ASC on location

I’m sorry to inform you that our long-term partnership with The Movie Network has come to an end. I received the following from our staunch supporter and former CEO, Tony Forrest.

“As you probably know, the Movie Network Partners, Warner Bros, Disney, MGM and Village Roadshow decided to disband their Joint Venture at the end of 2012. They will individually negotiate with Foxtel and other carriers for programme supply going forward. This has meant my now closing down the business I set up for them a short 13 years ago. Many of our staff have already secured positions in like fields. Without exception, I have had a gun team.”

I thank Tony and all the Movie Network team for their contribution and their support of the ACS and the Australian Film and Television industry. Under Tony’s inspired leadership, the Movie Network nurtured and encouraged Australian talent and production, and afforded many opportunities to those who may not have necessarily been afforded said opportunities. This years National Awards will not be televised and for that I am very sorry, but am grateful for the 3 previous years where our ACS Awards have been available to the public, and those members unable to attend.

Geoff Boyle ACS - RAW Workshop Tour

I’m pleased to announce that plans are underway for the ACS 2013 series of RAW WORKSHOPS with world renowned Cinematographer and CML website founder Geoff Boyle FKBS.

In this series of Workshops, Geoff Boyle will take you through RAW workflow from acquisition, to on set media management, to post production. With a healthy mix of theory, practical demonstrations, personal observations and hands on sessions, you will discover the every day issues of using RAW, what it adds and how to handle it.

2013 ACS National Awards for Cinematography

Canberra will be celebrating its Centenary in 2013 and there will be no bigger night than May 25th when Gold award winning cinematographers meet to celebrate their night of nights in our Nation's Capital! Everyone is warmly welcome to come to Canberra for a weekend of festivities. More details soon, just save the date now so you don't miss out, as the ACT Branch, under the leadership of Robb Shaw Velzen, will no doubt have some surprises in store.
Until next time…

Canon expands EF Cinema Lens line-up with two new prime lenses for 4K cameras

Canon Australia have announced the launch of two new fixed-focal-length EF Cinema Lenses: the CN-E14mm T3.1 L F and CN-E135mm T2.2 L F (for EF mounts). Featuring exceptional optical performance, the two new lenses support a range of motion picture and video production applications, including 4K (4096 x 2160 pixels) production standards.

The new Canon CN-E14mm T3.1 L F and CN-E135mm T2.2 L F prime lenses deliver outstanding optical performance, supporting use with 4K-resolution cameras. Offering compatibility with 35mm full-frame sensors, the lenses can be paired with not only high-end digital SLR cameras, but also digital cinema cameras equipped with industry-standard-size Super 35mm-equivalent sensors, including Canon’s EF-mount Cinema EOS digital cinema camera line-up, as well EF-mount cameras incorporating APS-H-size or APS-C-size sensors.

CN-E14mm T3.1 L F

“These two new lenses join with Canon’s CN-E24mm T1.5 L F, CN-E50mm T1.3 L F, and CN-E85mm T1.3 L F primes to offer a broad line-up of five precision-matched, competitive EF-mount Cinema prime lenses,” said Charles Montesin, Brand Manager – Cinema EOS, Canon Australia. “The line-up provides high optical performance across a range of versatile focal lengths.”

“The new prime lenses are part of the Canon Cinema EOS System of professional digital cinematography products, which include the EOS C500 4K/2K Digital Cinema Camera, EOS C300 Digital Cinema Camera, EOS C100 Digital Video Camera and EOS-1D C 4K DSLR Cinema Camera, and four Canon Cinema zoom lenses”.

Employing such materials as UD (ultra-low dispersion) glass, effective in eliminating chromatic aberration, and large-diameter aspherical lens elements,* the two new EF Cinema prime lenses achieve high-resolution imaging from the centre of the frame to the outer edges. The lenses deliver colour reproduction performance optimised for cinematic applications in harmony with that of other EF Cinema Lens-series models, and are each equipped with an 11-blade aperture diaphragm for soft, attractive blur characteristics. Featuring compact, lightweight body designs, the CN-E14mm T3.1 L F and CN-E135mm T2.2 L F weigh only 1.2 kg and 1.4 kg, respectively.

CN-E135mm T2.2 L F

The Canon CN-E14mm T3.1 L F and CN-E135mm T2.2 L F each include a focus ring that can be rotated up to approximately 300 degrees to enable minute changes in focus. In addition, the focus and aperture values are displayed at an angle on each side of the lens’s exterior casings to ensure visibility when users are positioned behind the camera. A future firmware update for the EOS C300, EOS C500 and EOS-1D C will allow data regarding the lens name and shooting settings to be sent to the camera on which the lens is mounted through the electronic connection in the lens mount, enabling the camera to automatically correct for uneven peripheral illumination.

Through the comprehensive strength of Canon’s EF Cinema zoom and prime lenses, the company will support the diverse imaging creation needs of the motion-picture and other digital high-resolution production industries, contributing to further expanding the possibilities in visual expression and the development of cinematic culture. The Canon CN-E14mm T3.1 L F and Canon CN-E135mm T2.2 L F will be available in Australia from mid April and late May, respectively, with pricing set at dealer discretion.

NT Branch News, January 2013

by Andrew Hyde, NT President

For a couple of days this past month Darwin was the coolest capital city in the country, struggling to 30 degrees, where elsewhere, others sweltered. It’s the result of the monsoons' arrival and normally coincides with a reduction in all things production. It was a good chance for us to take stock of a productive year.

The ACS NT Branch recently sponsored the category for best cinematography at the “Fist Full of Films”, the NT’s leading short film festival. The award was won by the ACS’s youngest member, 11 year old Maxim Hussey for his film Evil Pig which coincidently, starred his dad Stephen Cavenagh, who himself picked up an award at the recent ACS QLD/NT Awards.

In late November 2012, the branch assisted in the running of a sound recording Masterclass in Darwin, which was provided by AFTRS and facilitated by Mark Tarpey. The two-day workshop was well attended by local ACS members, and we are pleased to announce that activities for 2013 will kick off with a Cinematography Workshop to be held in Alice Springs. Honorary Territorian, Pieter DeVries ACS will bring his workshop to the Red Centre, having previously facilitated two highly successful sessions in Darwin over the past twelve months. The geographical divide between the Top End and the Centre is a constant source of frustration for the NT branch, so we are thrilled to be bringing Pieter to Alice for his workshop on March 8th.

Congratulations to two former Territorians – Rob Hill ACS who has been appointed to the ABC’s Washington bureau after several years as the ABC’s China cameraman, and to Allan Collins ACS whose cinematography was recently showcased as Director of Photography on the ABC documentary Croker Island Exodus.

ACS HQ Report

January has been very quiet, mainly due to the holiday period.

This has allowed us to do some maintenance and add some new electrical installations, including two small spotlights for the theatre area and switches for the new electric blind in the Boardroom. Richard Hawkins, a young NSW member, has done most of the grunt work under the supervision of John Morton. Many thanks to both of you from the ACS.

Pieter De Vries ACS continues his very successful workshops at the HQ, with more to come this year. Thanks Piet for your support of the Society across so many areas.

Aleksei Vanamois, another young NSW member, screened his latest short film that he was the cinematographer on to the cast and crew one Sunday.

The NSW Branch held its regular 3rd Thursday “Drop In”, where DP Chris McHardy screened segments of his latest feature film "Final Move". Chris is a young DP who we’re bound to hear more of in the future, and did a great job with this low budget film.

During February, the ACS will co-host a “Kidz Flicks” Premiere screening for cast, crew and family at the ACS HQ.

“Killer on the Loose” was Directed by Grace (12 years of age), and the Camera Operators were York and Madison (10 year olds). This film was a prize at last year's festival for Grace to make, and will be screened at this year's Festival. The production of this film and the Kidz Flicks initiative is fully supported by Lemac, Spectrum Post and the ACS.

Mary Wood & Family Visit ACS HQ

The photos below are of Mary Wood (and family) with the Fries Mitchell BNC, donated by her company, Ross Wood Productions to the Powerhouse Museum, now on loan to the ACS at the ACS HQ.

The BNC was one of two, originally purchased by Artransa Park Studios for the “Whiplash” television series. After Artransa closed its French’s Forest studio complex, Ross Wood Snr ACS purchased both cameras, which were then sent to Fries in the US for conversion from rack over movement to reflex. The deal included Fries keeping one & Ross Wood Productions keeping the other.

A Postcard from ACT member Jimmy Ennett

Hi Everyone,

I am in post-production for my graduate short film “Billy Cart”, which would be a very different film if it weren’t for the techniques and experience that I gleaned from working with Garry Phillips ACS on “The Railway Man”, an opportunity afforded to me through the NFSA-ACS John Leake OAM ACS Award from last year.

When I was trying to think of a practical, cheap and safe way of filming a 9 year old kid going down a steep hill on an old billy cart I thought of the simplicity in engineering that Garry spoke of with his past films.
I managed to call in some favours from a friend who owns a golf cart and built a wooden frame to attach the billy cart to the back of the golf cart. This allowed me to sit in the passenger side of the golf cart and shoot the scene from directly in front of the billy cart (which also acted as a brake so that our 9 year old actor was safe).

I was recently awarded a grant from the ACT government to film a proof-of-concept short film and have just moved to Sydney from Canberra to try my luck working wherever I can in this amazing industry.

I look forward to seeing you all at the National Awards in my home town this year.

Cheers,

Jimmy

"The Australian" Photo Competition

Congratulations to Queensland member, Jeff Hogan who has just been announced as the winner of The Australian – Oz In Focus Photographic Competition.

Jeff calls his winning entry a “happy accident.” The shot was taken while shooting a television commercial in Bowral, at the Bradman Museum.

The judges, in conjunction with Orion Cruises, loved “the exuberance and the immediacy of the shot, and the triumphantly Australian setting, adjacent to the International Cricket Hall of Fame”.

Now for the technical boffins – Jeff shot with a Nikon D3, with a 14 – 24mm zoom at 14mm. Shutter at 1/350, exposure 9.5. Just love that stuff!!!

The winning prize was…wait for it…A 10 night Orion Expedition Cruises photography themed voyage for two from Bali to Cairns. But it gets better, as one of the photographic presenters hosting the cruise is none other than Pieter De Vries ACS.

Have a great trip Jeffrey. You’re in excellent hands.

Fujifilm and Fujinon Extends Role as ACS Major National Sponsor

In a move sure to please all the members of the ACS and their many associates, Fujifilm and Fujinon have again reaffirmed their commitment to the society by extending their role as Major National Sponsor for 2013.

Fujifilm Australia General Manager Motion Picture Film, Recording Media and Optical Devices Marc Van Agten said, “In challenging times Fujifilm and Fujinon feel it’s more important than ever to support the local industry and specifically the talented creative individuals and filmmakers who make up the ACS. The ACS does so much for the industry and we are delighted to be able to give them our continued support in return.”

2013 is the fourth consecutive year that Fujifilm and Fujinon have been the ACS’ Major National Sponsor and also the year that is expected to see sales of its new Fujinon Cabrio lenses break company records. The Fujinon PL 19-90 Cabrio (ZK4.7x19) lens in particular with its exclusive detachable servo drive unit, flange focal distance adjustment, macro function and long focal range has already been picked up and used by many ACS members.

ACS National President Ron Johanson ACS said, “I’m afraid I must repeat the mantra that I have been repeating for some time when I get this kind of excellent news. Everyone at the ACS is delighted that Fujifilm and Fujinon have again decided to support the society by continuing as Major National Sponsor. Put simply the ACS could not exist without the support of sponsors such as Fujifilm and Fujinon and I would like to offer my deepest thanks to Marc Van Agten, Simon Becker, Simon Murphy, Chris Royal, Phil Cannon and indeed the entire Fujifilm and Fujinon team for their invaluable and continued support of our great society. 2013 looks to be an interesting year for our industry and I would urge any ACS members who haven’t yet tried shooting with a Fujinon Cabrio lens to do so. They really are excellent.”
