From the President

Greetings ACS colleagues,

November is famous for the Melbourne Cup, the Derby, the first Test match of the summer, the Brisbane International Film Festival and of course Movember, which I hope you’ve all participated in, in some way shape or form.

But November is also ACS Awards month!

This year I had the great privilege to attend 3 of the 4 State and Territory Awards for Cinematography presentations. I was in Poland for the final one of the year in Victoria, at which Ernie Clark ACS did the honours.

There were many highlights, but who can forget the Shadowcatchers – James Bond theme in Adelaide, the wonderful, inspiring speech from Ron Windon ACS as Guest of Honour in Queensland, and a fantastic new venue along with Ray Martin and Guest of Honour, Jennifer Byrne at the NSW/ACT Awards. Last but not least, the great show at the VIC/TAS Awards with comedian Lawrence Mooney MCing and Don McAlpine ACS ASC as Guest of Honour. All these elements were part of the greater picture, which saw ACS members putting their work on the line and being rewarded with either Gold, Silver or Bronze plaques. The Gold winners will go directly to the National Awards in Canberra next year.

The Awards will also be remembered for the presentation of Accreditation certificates and pins to those 7 worthy recipients, and those who received Special Awards, like Jo Rossiter ACS (Milton Ingerson Award SA/WA), Randall Wood (Judges Award QLD/NT), Tim McGahan ACS (Edwin Scragg Award QLD/NT), Toby Oliver ACS (Ross Wood Sr ACS Judges Award NSW/ACT) and Matthew Allard (NSW/ACT) who scooped the pool in the Neil Davis International News category. At the VIC/TAS awards their inaugural Judge’s Award for the Best Entry was won by Hugh Turral for “Hath No Man.” Edward Goldner picked up 7 awards in 3 categories displaying his talents in very differing genres, and Peter Falk ACS did very well picking up two Golds in Documentary, Cinema & TV. Not only that but the three State Presidents attending all won door prizes!

To see all the winners in all categories follow the link, from which you can select from each of the state Awards ceremonies:

2012 State/Territory Award Winners on Showreelfinder »

Our ACS Awards for Cinematography presentation nights are very special indeed as they afford us the opportunity to simply catch up with old friends and refresh our memories of how things might have been. It’s also the chance to thank our National & State sponsors for the contribution they make all year round to the success of our Society. Our collective thanks go out to all our sponsors who give so generously.

Finally, as the year 2012 draws to a close, I want to take this moment to wish you all a joyful Christmas, spent close to those you love and a fantastic 2013. I just love this time of year, for so many different reasons, and I look forward to sneaking an extra bit of pudding when Linda’s back is turned!

My thoughts are with you all at Christmas and I thank you for making our Society the best it can be.

Until 2013…

Ron Johanson ACS

Skyline 70 Supporting the Heavy Weights

The Skyline 70, 150mm ball levelling fluid head is Miller Camera Support Equipment’s latest innovation. Ideally suited to digital cinematography, the Skyline 70 incorporates advanced precision drag and counterbalance systems that support a diverse choice of camera configurations, with payloads from 4.5 kg to 37.5 kg making it an extremely versatile fluid head.

With this wide payload range, the Skyline 70 makes an ideal companion for camera models from the smaller RED EPIC and DSLR systems to the industry heavyweights, Sony F65 and ARRI Alexa fully rigged with all the bells and whistles.

The Skyline 70 is packed with clever little touches like an illuminated rear mounted control panel to enable the DP to make quick and simple adjustments on the go day and night.

A totally new counterbalance system provides 8 positions of adjustment to enable payloads to be perfectly balanced at various centres of gravity. In addition, the ultra-smooth 7 plus zero selectable pan and tilt fluid drag offers distinct levels of drag resistance that is repeatable even in extreme temperature ranges from -40 to +65 degrees allowing the operator to achieve soft take-offs, smooth stops and perfectly balanced diagonal transitions. In addition, features like superior calliper disc brake system and safety tilt lock mechanism gives you peace of mind that your payload is protected from operational mishaps.

To further meet the demands of digital cinematography, the Skyline 70 also includes an industry standard 120mm quick release camera platform and optional mounting block adaptor for all those add-ons needed with this level of production.

A variety of system packages are available, from the Heavy Duty 2-Stage Carbon Fibre tripod to Heavy Duty Single Stage Alloy tripod to studio based Heavy Duty Studio Alloy tripod, Skyline 70 systems are built with the strength, stability & rigidity to enable the user to always be in control especially in challenging shooting conditions.

ACS HQ Report

The APDG (The Australian Production Designers Guild ) held their annual planning meeting one Sunday afternoon in the boardroom.

Pieter De Vries ACS continues his very popular training classes and workshops.

Autodesk Smoke demonstrated their latest technology to ACS members, along with members from the Editors Guild, which was a very successful evening.

The Ross Wood Snr. ACS Reflex Mitchell BNC camera has arrived and stands magnificently in the theatre area of the HQ. It is on loan for display from the Powerhouse Museum for 12 months, a must see.

Above is David Wakeley ACS being reunited with the Ross Woods ACS Mitchell BNC camera, which is on loan from the Powerhouse Museum and has just been installed in the ACS HQ. Fries converted the camera from the original rack over format to reflex for Ross Woods.

David commented: “I worked with the camera in its original form for 5 years at Artransa Park Studios. When we looked at the kit at the Powerhouse Museum archive facility we were not allowed to touch anything, but today (mostly because of the weight) we were allowed to help fit the camera together & install it in the locked presentation case. I'm not telling you how long it was since I last touched it!” Be sure to visit the ACS HQ to see this wonderful, historic camera.

The ACS NSW 3rd Thursday Drop In featured Mathew Alexander of Panasonic with two new cameras, the AG-HPX600EN P2HD camcorder, an extremely light weight camera with low power consumption and 10-bit 4:2:2 recording and also the DMC-GH3 which is Panasonic's latest Digital Single Lens Mirrorless camera for both photo and video applications.

Mathew Allard, who is based in Malaysia and works for Al Jazeera International, demonstrated the new Kinefinity Kineraw camera and some lenses from G.L. Cinemod Optical Service to 30 very interested members.

Remember the HQ is there for all members to use.

An Invitation from Sony Australia to All Members

ACS Supports Hungarian Society (HSC) Masterclass

At every opportunity, given our limited resources, the ACS endeavours to assist our fellow Societies around the globe. During November, Victorian members Laszlo Baranyai ACS HSC and Emil Novak HSC took part in a Masterclass in Budapest with Lajos Kokltai ASC HSC.

This Masterclass afforded around 100 students the opportunity to learn and gain further knowledge from these three masters of the art. The ACS is proud to have played a small part in the success of this event, and congratulate Emil and our friends at the Hungarian Society of Cinematographers for this positive initiative.

ASC Wins Emmy: Primetime Engineering Award

We congratulate the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Technology Committee, for the development of the ASC Color Decision List (ASC CDL) which enables primary color-correction data to be passed from the shooting set to dailies and editorial post, as well as interchanged between different color-correction systems and applications. Critically important to cinematographers, directors and the creative teams responsible for designing the artistic look for a motion picture or TV production, the ASC CDL helps communicate scene-specific looks throughout the production and post production pipeline in an iteratively modifiable fashion that can also form the basis or starting point for final color grading. A Message from our Youngest ACS Member, Maxim Hussey

"Dear Ron,

The last few weeks have been very busy. At the NT “Fist Full Of Films” two weeks ago I won the award for best cinematography with my new film, Evil Pig. I was very surprised when the news got broken to me the next morning.

I never expected to win the award, not even in our wildest dreams! Our film got shown on the big screen at the Darwin Entertainment Centre in front of a huge crowd! Everyone said it was very funny afterwards. Here are some screenshots from the film.

Cheers,
Maxim."

Maxim is a Student member in the Northern Territory branch, and we congratulate him on this, his first award. Somehow I think we’ll be hearing much more from Maxim Hussey.

ACS Mentor Attachment Scheme

We continue to reap rewards with our ACS Mentor Scheme. During November we were instrumental in providing Attachments for the film “The Rover” in South Australia, along with an individual mentorship for Thom Neal (VIC) with Toby Oliver ACS. Thus far we have had 13 individual enquiries, with 10 placements. Our thanks to all the cinematographers who have generously agreed to take part as Mentors.

Opera House Purchases 4 Fujinon Lenses in AV Upgrade

Arguably Australia’s greatest recognisable icon, the Sydney Opera House has purchased four high-end Fujinon lenses in a major upgrade of its comprehensive audio recording facility that will now also include video capture and recording capabilities.

The SOH purchased two XA88x8.8BESM telephoto field lenses that combine the industry’s widest angle in its class with an 88X zoom range. The XA88x8.8BESM also boasts Fujinon's exclusive Aspheric Technology and newly developed EBC coating, which reduces ghost and flare and increases light transmission. Uniquely, the XA88x8.8BESM’s proprietary anti-fogging design also minimises lens fogging and reduces downtime due to moisture.

In addition, they also purchased two Fujinon HA42x9.7BERD premier series stabilised telephoto ENG-style lenses in part due to their suitability and success in large venues around the world. The Sydney Opera House’s upgrade of its comprehensive audio and video recording facility is underway and is scheduled to be completed early 2013.

AFTRS Purchases Alexas from ARRI Australia

The Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS), regarded as one of the top 20 film schools in the world, recently made a major foray into the digital camera market with its purchase of two ARRI ALEXA cameras, along with an ARRIFLEX 416 Plus HS film camera, compact prime lenses, super speed lenses and an Alura zoom lens and accessories, as part of the package deal, for ongoing cinematography training and course development.

AFTRS Head of Cinematography Kim Batterham ACS said,”There was no doubt about the ALEXA’s pedigree and maturity. With over 100 cameras sold across Australia and New Zealand, we knew it was good. I must say a very special thank you to ARRI Munich’s Head of Business Unit Camera and DIS, Stephan Schenk for his help in getting us a new ARRIFLEX 416 Plus HS film camera as part of the package. To say we’re delighted is an understatement. Our students are very excited by the creative possibilities these cameras and lenses bring. Stefan Sedlmeier, ARRI Australia, and ARRI Munich’s support for AFTRS, our courses and Australia’s cinematographers of the future is simply excellent and we are very grateful indeed”.

ARRI Australia MD Stefan Sedlmeier said; “We take our role in the education of the filmmakers of tomorrow very seriously indeed. Our commitment is to help them with their understanding of acquisition technology and workflows to the best of our ability whenever we can. We are also continuing our policy of loaning cameras to educational institutions whenever possible and helping them develop their already excellent courses with additional training, workshops and demos.”
