From the President

Greetings ACS friends and colleagues,

The month of September featured two very important events in the ACS calendar. Firstly there was the Annual General Meeting of the Society, where the Branch delegates assembled at the National Headquarters and the following were elected as National Office Bearers for 2012-2013.

National President: Ron Johanson ACS (QLD)
Vice President: Ernie Clark ACS (SA)
Vice President: Alan Cole ACS (VIC)
Secretary: David Wakeley ACS (NSW)
Asst. Secretary: David Burr ACS (NSW)
Treasurer: Mylene Ludgate (SA)
Asst. Treasurer: Ernie Clark ACS (SA)

Below is part of my President’s Report to the AGM:

“In closing I would like to remind you all that we continue to experience growth and change within the Society. This will continue as we come to terms with ever changing technologies and the requirements of our members and indeed, the perception of who a cinematographer is and what is the job description. We have collectively achieved a lot, but need to continue to give our members, sponsors and supporters a strong and cohesive ACS. We will need to be conscious of the fact that our members need to feel they are getting value for money, and that they do indeed get that value by providing events for them that confirm this. All Branches must provide events for members, no matter how large or how small. I propose that a minimum of four events be planned by each Branch, for each year, and I don’t believe that this is too much to expect. It’s important we encourage and foster the next group of leaders to step forward and take the ACS into the next phase of growth. If we don’t we do so knowing full well the outcome may be a negative one. The ACS has a responsibility to consult with industry like never before, as we are being looked at for leadership and we must provide it”.

ACCREDITATION was the other very important event held during September at the National Headquarters. Accreditation is the highest honour presented to a member, and the Accredited cinematographer shall have the right to use the letters “ACS” after his or her name.
We had an outstanding Accreditation Panel comprising: Chair - Ernie Clark ACS, Ron Johanson ACS, David Wakeley ACS, Ellery Ryan ACS, Don McAlpine ACS ASC, Andrew Lesnie ACS ASC, Anna Howard ACS, Geoff Burton ACS, Alan Cole ACS, Garry Phillips ACS, Ted Rayment ACS, Roger Lanser ACS, along with David Lewis ACS as Scrutineer and Alexis Castagna as Asst. Scrutineer.

I’m pleased to confirm the names of the 7 cinematographers representing a wide range of genres, who were Accredited after screenings held on 7 & 8 September 2012.
Jason Hargreaves ACS (QLD -337#)
Brad Dillon ACS (QLD -338#)
Justin Hanrahan ACS (NSW – 339#)
Simon Chapman ACS (NSW – 340#)
Lachlan Milne ACS (NSW – 341#)
Greig Fraser ACS (VIC -342#)
Trent Butler ACS (TAS – 343#)

These members join the 336 already Accredited since the inception of Accreditation in 1963. They will have their certificates and Accreditation pins presented at their State & Territory Awards in November.
I thank you all once again for the honour of being your National President over the past four years. It’s been a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding experience and I am very proud of the ACS, it’s role within our industry, the generosity of our members and the optimism we have for the future.

Until next time, enjoy the read.
Ron Johanson ACS

VALE - Ron Taylor AM ACS

The ACS, along with the International film community are all saddened by the recent passing of one of our true greats. I refer of course to Ron Taylor AM ACS, legendary underwater cinematographer and conservationist who passed away on Sunday, September 9, at a private hospital in Sydney. For over 50 years Ron ventured underwater, and along with wife Valerie were still active up to the time of his illness, spending many months each year on expeditions to remote corners of the earth to continue filming the wonders of the underwater world.
Ron Taylor was accredited with the letters ACS in 1967 and inducted into the ACS Hall of Fame in 2011. He was a wonderful man, who possessed an innate ability to communicate with all those who crossed his path. He was a humanitarian, an innovative cinematographer who contributed so much to the Australian film and television industry, and a true gentleman. Ron Taylor AM ACS will be sadly missed by us all, and as an ongoing tribute, the ACS has decided to name the Experimental & Specialised award category in his honour.

Ron Taylor AM ACS
Experimental & Specialised Cinematography

This newly named Award will be presented for the first time at the 2013 National Awards for Cinematography in Canberra.

A POSTCARD FROM HENRY PIERCE ACS

Hi, how are you going! Yes, still shooting in Germany on a children's TV series for Southern star Australia and NDR Germany. It’s been 5 month shoot and almost over. We have been shooting in a castle most of the time and are now on location. The castle had a lot of challenges with high windows and at the pace we are shooting no time for cherry pickers. I chose the Alexa for its great range of latitude, and had some big ND frames made up. All has turned out well so far and working and living in Europe for 5 months is fantastic. All those countries so close you can visit on weekends. But, there's no place like home, and looking forward to being back in Aus soon.
Here's a photo of me enjoying myself with one of the grips.
Cheers,
Henry

ACS National Archive Report

The ACS Archive at the National Headquarters is slowly getting catalogued and sorted. The books in the Bruce Hillyard ACS room have now been listed (there are nearly 600 of them) and thanks to Ernie Clarke ACS, this list is now on the ACS website. The collection of American Cinematographer Magazines kindly donated by Daryl Binning ACS, and supplemented with our own collection is probably one of the most comprehensive anywhere in the world.

Our camera memorabilia continues to grow and we currently have an assortment of over 30 cameras on display. This includes a 1907 Debrie Parvo hand cranked camera, and the world’s only 35mm Harmer and Heath - hand made in Sydney especially for George Heath in the late 1930’s, A Fastax 16mm 5700fps high speed camera that was used to record the British atomic bomb explosions at Maralinga, a 16mm Auricon Pro 600 kit originally imported for the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games and donated by the ABC, a World War 2 Spitfire gun camera, an R35 Mitchell and a 16mm Mitchell, ACS Founding President Syd Wood’s Movietone Wall camera, a 16mm Photosonics Actionmaster 500 and 35mm BL4 donated by Panavision and a GII Panaflex kindly on long term loan from Panavision. We also have Ross Wood’s three wheel Elemack dolly and have on loan a Worrell Head, from NSW member Damien Smith, so that we can mount the R35 on it. In November we will be taking delivery of Ross Wood’s 35mm BNC Mitchell that is being loaned to us by the Powerhouse Museum for the next two years. Our collection also includes many other generous donations of memorabilia and documents of historic value.

A Message from the Editor of AC Magazine

There's a lot happening in our industry that I don't know about. And if I don't know about it, I can't run a story on it, and please don't think that I'm only interested in big movies… on the contrary… if you shoot for any of the following genres - docos, current affairs, magazine, news (dramatic or interesting), music videos, science, experimental, short films, big budget movies, low budget movies, no budget movies, TV commercials, TV drama, TV soaps, sport, art installations, industrial, health etc., I WANT TO KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO. So send me something!

A message to ACS members from Andrew Barley: Macquarie Commercial Finance

Our lenders have announced some aggressive pricing of late so we welcome the opportunity to quote on any possible upcoming business. Car finance has become easier than you could possibly imagine with our lenders having a `replacement finance commitment policy` in place, less red tape, no financials, just email me to find out how. Banks are pricing aggressively for Home /Residential Investment property finance at present, with 3 year fixed rates as low as 5.59% and standard variable rates with discounts up to 1% for life of loan available for loans in excess of $500,000, and perhaps even greater discounts for loan in excess of $1m.
