| In This Issue- From the President From the PresidentGreetings ACS colleagues, Its that time of the year when we celebrate ACS Accreditation & Awards judging. It really is a celebration of the very best we have to offer as cinematographers, no matter which genre we work in. September is also the month for the National AGM, where all the branches' representatives assemble to elect the new National Executive for the 2012-2013 year. Its a real opportunity to have a voice and to put forward ideas and proposals to ensure the ACS continues to grow, and more importantly listen to the views and opinions of our members. If you have something to say, please let your Branch President know and they can table your recommendations to the meeting on September 9, or contact me at: president@austcine.org.au Accreditation screenings will take place at the ACS HQ on September 7 & 8. We have a fantastic panel assembled this year including; David Wakeley ACS, Ellery Ryan ACS, Don McAlpine ACS ASC, Andrew Lesnie ACS ASC, Anna Howard ACS, Geoff Burton ACS, Ernie Clark ACS, Alan Cole ACS, Garry Phillips ACS and Ted Rayment ACS. David Lewis ACS and I will act as scrutineers. The successful candidates will earn the right to use the letters ACS after their name, and they will be presented with their Accreditation pin and certificate at their respective Awards presentations in October/November. The ACS Patrons Wall of Can Do is almost full, and the generosity of the Branches must be acknowledged. I thank you for showing the confidence to reinvest your hard earned funds in the future of the National Headquarters, which incidentally, draws praise from all those who have paid a visit and enjoyed the hospitality afforded them. Welcome and thanks to the Tasmanian Branch as our latest contributors to The Wall. Thanks to NSW member Damian Smith, who has generously given his Worrall Head to us on loan. This will enable us to position the Ross Wood Elemack dolly, Mitchell camera and now the Worrall Head in a prominent position in the HQ for all to see. We are very fortunate. But it gets better! We now have a comprehensive list of all the wonderful books available in the Bruce Hillyard Room at the ACS HQ. After many long hours, this has finally been put in place by Ted and Anne Rayment. The ACS Mentor Scheme was re introduced this year, with much success. Thus far we have 4 confirmed placements with cinematographers; Ridley Williams, Mark Wareham ACS, Andrew Commis ACS, Peter James ACS ASC and one still to be finalised with Dion Beebe ACS ASC. The ACS is a proud supporter of the following competitions and events this year: In closing, I thank you all once again for the honour you have afforded me by allowing me to be your National President over the past four years. Its been a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding experience and I am very proud of the ACS itself, its role within our industry, the generosity of its members and the optimism we all share for the future. Hi Ron, A Postcard from the set of Universal's "The Fast and the Furious," shooting in London. It's been crazy shooting here during the Olympics, but has been a great buzz at the same time. Great to be working with my 1st AC brother Matty again. The two of us are seen in the attached snap, along with my sons Tom and Mitch, who spent the day with us at Shepperton Studios. Future camera department? Should be back in November. We'll see. All the best, Steve Sponsor Spotlight: PanavisionIncreased production levels have seen Panavision Australia kept busy recently with a range of international and local shoots. Now in its second month of filming, the Mad Max franchise, Fury Road is shooting on the other side of the world. Director/creator George Millers stellar crew includes renowned cinematographer, John Seale ACS ASC. Currently they are freezing/boiling/freezing in the Namibian desert.
The Wolverine (Dir.: James Mangold) is now underway in Sydney and is in the experienced hands of US based cinematographer, Amir Mokri. The majority of the shoot will be at Fox Studios, plus locations in NSW and Japan. Fresh from completing I, Frankenstein, Ross Emery ACS is the second unit cinematographer. Good news for Melbourne with the latest series of Seven Networks Winners and Losers (Prod: Bevan Lee/Maryanne Carroll) being confirmed. Cinematographer Greg de Marignys debut in Prime Time television drama comes hot on the heels of his third feature, Blinder (Dir.: Richard Gray, 2013). Adding to his growing list of international productions, Judd Overton has just finished filming Nims Island: Return of the Pirates (Dir.: Brendan Maher) in Queensland.
Recently wrapped in Victoria is The Dr. Blake Mysteries (Dir.: Ken Cameron, ABCTV), a ten-part series photographed by Lou Irving ACS. A big welcome back to Australia for Mandy Walker ACS ASC who will soon be filming John Currans next movie, Tracks. Following camels across the outback, Mandy will be using Panavision Millennium cameras and anamorphic lenses. Awards Entries Now Open!The 2012 State and Territory Branch Awards are open for entries. Dont miss out on having your work included in the judging for the 2012 State and Territory Awards and the chance to go through to the National Awards in Canberra in 2013. Directors of Photography: Personal WorksThis Photographic Exhibition was held first in Queensland and is now showing at the ACS HQ. There are plans to change and to add to the Exhibition, so who knows where it will pop up next? We look forward to seeing you there at the opening night on Thursday, September 6. Shadowcatchers Book LaunchThere will be a special Shadowcatchers book launch event on October 10 at the HAYDEN ORPHEUM PICTURE PALACE. A panel discussion will take place, moderated by David Stratton and including Bruce Beresford, Martha Ansara, Jack Thompson, Russell Boyd ACS ASC, Don McAlpine ACS ASC, Andrew Lesnie ACS ASC, Geoff Burton ACS, Peter James ACS ASC and Pieter De Vries ACS. ACS HQ Report - August 2012Another busy month at the HQ. Pieter de Vries almost took up residency this month, holding 15 days of his very popular classes at the HQ, with more to be held in September. The Channel 9, 60 minutes team again used the facility for one of its interviews. The Australian Designers Guild held their awards meeting in the boardroom. Ian Nicholson, NSW member, will again conduct his introduction to film classes over the next four Wednesday nights. Several members have taken advantage of the Mac computer in the Archives to hone their editing skills , download cards and do some color grading on their work. Sidat De Silva showed the members some of his work at very low light levels with the Canon C300 camera on his short film at the very popular NSW ACS Drop In. September also promises to be very busy at the HQ. First off will be the DIRECTORS OF PHOTOGRAPHY: PERSONAL WORKS photographic exhibition starting on Thursday Sept 6 The Accreditation screenings will be held in early September, along with the National Annual General Meeting. Remember the HQ is there for all members to use. Funnel Web Spider DollyThe Funnel Web Spider Dolly has been designed and built by new NSW Branch member, Rory Anderson. Proposed Neil Davis MuseumNeil Davis was a legendary News cameraman, who is a member of the ACS Hall of Fame. There is a proposal to establish in his hometown of Sorrell - which is just north of Hobart - a museum in his honour. The ACS would obviously be a keen supporter of this proposal. ACES-IIF WorkflowACES is a workflow being developed by the Academy of Motion Pictures to standardise the process of digital production - from camera to exhibition. This is yet to go through SMPTE standards. http://www.fxguide.com/featured/the-art-of-digital-color Robert Morton has asked the ACS to take part, by coordinating a series of tests involving shooting a number of camera systems that are ACES compatible - F65, Alexa RAW, RED EPIC, running them through the pipeline and making the results available to all those interested. Were likely to test standard workflows as comparisons so that a true understanding of the benefits can be attributed to the workflow. ACES is still in its infancy - but more and more post production tools are starting to support it. It has not become a standard yet, but there are already productions like "Justified" that have used it - see American Cinematographer magazine March 2011.
