From the President

Greetings ACS colleagues,

I hope you had the time and the opportunity to view the new version of the Lake Eyre documentary on the ABC. What a fitting testament to the memories of these three fine men; John Bean ACS, Gary Ticehurst and Paul Stanley.

This was a brilliant documentary, beautifully produced and an absolute joy to watch. There is a companion book to the program that was launched recently in Sydney, which was written by Paul Stanley.

I can tell you that the design for the proposed ACS Memorial dedicated to all those cinematographers and colleagues who have lost their lives pursuing their craft has been approved and will be implemented shortly. After the official unveiling, it will take pride of place in the ACS Library.

My thanks to the team at Anifex for their incredible work in bringing this ACS initiative to fruition.

I would like, on behalf of us all to pass our collective condolences and warmest wishes onto our National Treasurer, Mylene Ludgate who lost her father recently after a prolonged illness. Mylene, our thoughts are with you, Malcolm and your family.

I'm pleased to announce that FUJIFILM are once again the Major National Sponsor of the Society for the next twelve months. I thank Marc Van Agten and the FUJIFILM/FUJINON team for their ongoing support of the Society. Also thanks to Sony who have confirmed once again they will be a Platinum sponsor.

Gold sponsors who have confirmed so far include Lemac, Kodak, Panavision, AFTRS, Cameraquip, Showreelfinder, NFSA and The Movie Network. May I thank you all for your continued support and I look forward to all our other wonderful sponsors coming on board for another year. Please support them, as they support us.

Until next time…
Ron Johanson ACS
National President

Sponsor Spotlight: Digital Pictures

RELEASE THE RANGER! - DIGITAL PICTURES' DATA CART

Digital Pictures' mobile on set Data Carts have recently been used on three high-profile productions, including Screentime's upcoming Brothers in Arms; season two of Channel Seven's Winners & Losers (both shot on the ARRI Alexa cameras); the epic 3D stereo documentary by James Cameron, Deep Sea Challenge; and is about to be used on the television version of the cult classic novel, Puberty Blues from Southern Star Entertainment.

Coined the RANGER Data Cart, it is designed to manage a production's digital rushes in a mobile or remote location in one efficient data management system.

Either on set, or based with editorial, the Data Cart does everything from card offload, secure back-ups to LTO data tape and data integrity check, through to transcoding, colour management and applying a LUT for editorial delivery.

With more and more productions using digital cameras, Digital Pictures has tailored the cart to work with multiple camera formats both on 2D and 3D projects, from the Alexa, Red Epic, and Canon D5.

Louisa Kors, Producer on Screentime's Brothers in Arms said "Brothers in Arms utilised the RANGER Data Cart for our recent shoot. It was a fast and reliable way to process our daily rushes for editorial. Having the data cart with us meant that we had more control over the process, yet still had the expertise and back up support of Digital Pictures. The mobility of the cart meant that we had the option to use the cart on site, making the whole process both speedy and efficient, relieving a lot of pressure on production."

Winners and Losers 'Post Production Supervisor, Sue Washington also found the carts beneficial, "In season two of Winners & Losers, the production shot on the Alexa so it was a perfect match to use the Digital Pictures' RANGER Data Cart. It allowed us to have a great tapeless pipeline with rushes and post working as one."

Contact us for a demonstration.

Weisscam Introduces the "Soha" Camera Platform and "T-Plug" Connector

WEISSCAM TO LAUNCH NEW "SOHA" CAMERA PLATFORM AT NAB 2012

After more than two years of in-house development, WEISSCAM and the "SOHA" platform are set to change the professional camera market. Going forward every "T-CAM" will be equipped with this exciting new "SOHA" hardware.

As Weisscam DoP and CEO, Stefan Weiss comments: "We always wanted to develop a platform that outlasts the short product cycles that are current within the industry. With our new "SOHA" platform we can build cameras that are long lasting, extendable, flexible and always easy to use."

To achieve this innovative objective, WEISSCAM created the "SOHA" platform with the following design concepts:

- Interchangeable sensor board (2/3"; Super16 and Super35 format).
- High performance interface (up to 1.200MByte/s) for industry standard recorders.
- Uncompressed RAW and HD output.
- Modular software architecture.

WEISSCAM INTRODUCES THE NEW "T-PLUG" CONNECTOR

WEISSCAM's brand new T-PLUG connector extends the overall flexibility of the T-CAM digital film camera for total connectivity to external devices. The T-PLUG is an extremely slim and compact breakout connector which provides a high performance interface to the T-CAM for RAW and HD video formats, camera commands and power.

The high flexibility and ease of use of the T-CAM is provided by the SOHA platform core. WEISSCAM's design team invented the T-PLUG to empower users to extend this flexibility to the outside world.

To offer full connectivity to any other device, the T-PLUG provides:

- Multiple general purpose pins for sync signals and camera commands
- 6 x video out pins, switchable between HD-SDI and 3G-SDI, transferring HD 4:4:4 and 4:2:2 or RAW uncompressed. The number of outputs is selectable between one and six, depending on the recording devices inputs
- 2 x Power out pins for supplying accessories
