Another important update from...

ACS Awards Categories Committee Chair Warwick Field ACS

Broader entry options for ACS Awards for Cinematography - Collabs will be accepted this year into judging.

The manner in which we now work together is changing quite rapidly. With so many digital tools, software and assets at our disposal it has become easier to cross the line and share tasks. More and more we hear words like 'team' and 'collaboration' associated with getting through the creative tasks at hand.
To a greater degree it wasn't really impacting cinematography. When we shot film it was very much still magic how we could create such amazing images that were hard to imagine standing on set behind the camera. There were light meters, calculations, adjustments based on maths and physics and then, voila, then next day at rushes there were beautiful, emotion-filled images. Now digital cinematography has allowed more immediate ways to judge the shot making (and reduce the risks) and opened the door to cinematography for other creatives. And as a result we have many more cinematographers now than ever before.

And this has lead to cinematographic collaborations.

The ACS Awards has maintained a standard that doesn't allow for entries that have been shot by multiple cinematographers to be entered by multiple cinematographers. It is called Joint Cinematography and describes shoots where two or more DPs have shot the project at various times or locations. These entries were impossible to judge as we couldn't separate the work. In these cases we allow for a single entrant (ACS member) who can verify they have shot the majority of the project (at least 70%), identify their own work, and they may enter alone. The other contributing cinematographers cannot enter and will not be officially acknowledged in the event of an award.

Collab Cinematography - Special Terms & Conditions »

True collaboration on projects has now produced a new type of cinematographic work: the Collab. Now unlike joint cinematography, a "collab" is a situation where from the outset of the production, two ACS member cinematographers agree to shoot the project together in every way, from pre-production to post-production. It's a genuine collaboration of creative minds where each is capable and skilled but choose to share the task purely for creative reasons. They don't shoot separate parts of the project - they are in it together through every aspect.

The ACS has decided that collabs are becoming more prevalent and that in fairness, ACS members working on collabs should be allowed to enter into the awards. This is a complex step for us as we need to ensure the collabs submitted are genuine collabs and not joint cinematography. In order to define this and assess the entries, we have produced a special Collab Cinematography Terms and Conditions document to allow members to consider if their work meets the criteria of a collab and also to provide a tool for branches to make the same judgement.

We don't expect many collab entries immediately but in years to come we think they will increase.

If you have shot a project you think will qualify as a Collab check out this link for the T&C's. It has all the information you need. If in any doubt, contact your branch to discuss as the judges will not score an entry that does not meet the requirements.
