Biography

Jim Frater is an award­ winning Director of Photography and Cinematographer specialising in documentaries, drama­ documentaries,TV Dramas and feature films.

In September 2014 Jim received his Accreditation by the Australian Cinematographers Society (ACS). It is the highest honor that can be bestowed on an ACS member. It was also the year that he decided to focus on Features, and more drama based productions.

His work has been featured across all major Australian, UK and US networks, including the ABC, the BBC, CNN and NBC. Recent projects as Director of Photography include
ABC’s The Heights Season 1 & 2 TV Drama series (2018, 2019)
Feature Film RAMS B cam/splinter Unit DOP (2018)
Cinema Documentary Brett Whitely (2017)
3D/Imax Film Life in Space (2015)

Other notable Documentary Drama credits as Director of Photography ABC’s The War That Changed Us (2014), Enigma Man: A Stone Aged Mystery (2014) Desert Wars, Singapore 1942 – End Of Empire (2013), Leaky Boat (2011), Surviving Mumbai (2010) and The Great Escape: The Reckoning (2009). Jim was also Aerial Director of Photography on Jandamarra’s War (2011).

Jim is the recipient of over twenty cinematography awards, most recently an Australian Cinematographers Society (ACS) Golden Tripod for Cinematography in Dramatised Documentaries in 2015 for The War That Changed Us ­ Episode One, and a ACS Gold for Cinematography in Documentaries, Drama & TV category in 2014 for Enigma Man: A Stone Aged Mystery.
His work has also received AFI, AACTA, Emmy and Logie nominations. A full list of awards won by Jim is available upon request.
Jim has 30 years of experience behind the camera and is a member of the Australian Cinematographers Society, where he has served as President of the Western Australian branch, and is a member of Perth Professional Film Crew. He is a very experienced Steadi-cam owner/operator and aerial operator including drones.
