Biography

Dr. Janet Merewether is an award-winning Australian documentary filmmaker, designer, cinematographer, media artist, photographer and academic. Her film, digital art and longform documentary works produced by Go Girl Productions and Screen Culture include ‘Jabe Babe – A Heightened Life’ and ‘Maverick Mother,’ which have won numerous Australian and international prizes including TIDF, ATOM, IF and AFI awards, enjoying retrospectives in Taipei, Berlin and Boston. Her films have screened at the New York Film Festival, MoMA New Directors/ New Films and numerous international festivals. She completed her Doctoral degree at the University of Technology Sydney in 2008 on the subject of innovative hybrid documentary, and continues to explore new directorial and cinematographic strategies in media art and feature documentary. Her first feature documentary, which she produced, directed and shot in the Arctic Circle, ‘Reindeer in my Saami Heart’ has been nominated for two ATOM Awards for Best Documentary – Biography, and Best Indigenous Resource, as well as being nominated for Best Documentary Script at the Australian Writers’ Guild AWGIE Awards 2016. ‘Reindeer in my Saami Heart’ had its national premiere and theatrical release at the Palace Cinemas’ Scandinavian Film Festival, and its international premiere at the influential Margaret Mead Film Festival NY in October 2016. The film was in the running for the Margaret Mead Filmmaker Award, and has now been selected as a NSW HSC English text from 2019-2023. Janet has been employed as a cinematographer on four long-form commissioned documentaries, in addition to shooting a majority of the digital video scenes in her documentaries ‘Jabe Babe – A Heightened Life’ and ‘Maverick Mother’. For over 10 years she was a film titles and motion graphics designer, animator, and specialist Oxberry rostrum and motion control cinematographer, being employed on a wide range of Australian documentaries, feature films and short films.
