Biography

Born to a European mother and second-generation Australian father, both artists, Warwick Field ACS' distinctive aesthetic and significant expertise has seen him shoot projects all around the world.

Warwick became fascinated with the power of the image at a young age. This early interest led him on a path to stills photography motivated by the works of such photographers as the black and white landscaper Ansel Adams and the portrait-genius Henri Cartier-Bresson. But Warwick was soon drawn in by the magnetism of the moving image with all of its wonder and potential.

Starting out, Warwick pursued academic studies in film. Today he knows his most valuable cinematic education was found on the film set through collaboration with many of cinematography’s greats, supporting DPs such as Don McAlpine ACS ASC, Andrew Lesnie ACS ASC, David Eggby ACS, Nino Martinetti ACS, Lance Acord ASC , James Glennon ASC, Ernie Clark ACS, Vincent Monton ACS, Geoffrey Simpson ACS, Ian Baker ACS and Russell Boyd ACS in the capacities of 1st AC, Camera Operator and 2nd Unit DP. He thoroughly enjoyed the mentorship and development that came from his experiences with cinematographers such as these and also directors like multi award-winning, long-time collaborator Natasha Pincus along with Bruce Beresford, Spike Jonze, Fred Schepisi, George Miller, Ben Lewin, Alex Proyas, Simon Wincer, Paul Currie, Mark Steven Johnson, Rob Sitch, Paul Cox and Sue Brooks. He fast gained a reputation as one of Australia’s leading camera operators and enjoyed a career as a sought-after camera operator on several major Australian and International narrative feature film productions, before inevitably sliding comfortably into the role of Director of Photography.

Having shot projects in Africa, Europe, the U.S.A, all across Asia and Australia, Warwick's works have screened at film festivals throughout the world (including SXSW, Interfilm Berlin, LA Film Festival, Melbourne International Film Festival) and have been recognized at the highest levels, including nomination for the MTV VMA for Best Video, winner of two ARIA Awards (Best Video) and numerous ACS awards. Warwick’s collaboration with clients include Telstra, Mazda, Toyota, McDonalds, Holden, Mini Cooper, KFC, Ford, Burger King, L'Oreal, Blackmores, NRMA, Myer, Chemist Warehouse, TAC to name a few. He has shot music videos for high profile artists including Paul Kelly, Gotye, Missy Higgins, Pete Murray, Powderfinger, P!nk, Sarah Blasko, Something For Kate and The Paper Kites.

With vast experience in all film and digital formats including IMAX, Warwick is passionate about incorporating the best of emerging technologies while holding true to the fundamentals of cinema. Art and technique; both and always.
Warwick is known as a 'hands-on' cinematographer who prefers to operate the A camera on the majority of his work. Warwick's enthusiasm and dedication to a project is thorough and encompassing, irrespective of the scale or type of production. He prides himself on strong collaborative skills, deep professionalism, and a tireless work ethic and is driven by a passion for the creation of dramatic, provocative and memorable images that realize the story while delivering an immersive, emotional audience experience.

Warwick’s work has been profiled in several industry publications. He is often found on panels and forums discussing his work and the art and craft of cinematography. He works on Feature Films, TV Drama, Music Video, TVC's and Corporate production.

For the past five years, Warwick has been President of the Australian Cinematographers Society (Victoria). He is well known for his passion of bringing the art and technique of cinematography to the ACS Membership and local film industry by way of Screenings and Q&A's and technical events, forums, panels and lectures, often aimed at emerging students of cinematography.
